Diesel engine number

I have a series 3 SWB with the engine number 36801780
I believe the original engine in 1983 was petrol and I am trying to put a date on this diesel.
can anyone help please? Stanmac

are you sure its not 366, 5 bearing engines were fitted from 1980 on so your diesel engine could be contemporary

Thanks James. The number is definitely 368xxxxxx although the 8 has a centre punch hole in it. Could it be from another vehicle? Thanks Stan.

Thanks James. I have come to the conclusion that the number 8 was a mistake. On closer examination it looks like someone has tried to change the 8 into 6 by using a centre punch to alter the type on the top right of the 8. Having discussed this with a number of people, who all agree with you, it seems to be the only explanation.
