Hi there, and my early apologies for any posting errors as this is my first post. My 1979 SIII ex-mil 2.25 diesel started making a strange noise recently. To my untrained ears it sounded like an exhaust leak, so I went and tightened the manifold bolts to see if it made a difference, it didn't.

Here is a sound file I recorded with the noise it's currently making (recorded in engine-bay):

The noise is audible all the time, but is very easy to notice right at the end of the clip.

Hoping it's not the head gasket.

Oh, and also, because I'm a fool, I decided to tighten the three bolts holding the engine top cover in place as I figured it wouldn't do any harm. And it went fine, until as I tightened the front bolt some diesel ignited, went POOF! and scared me, heh. Didn't appear to make matters worse though...

Help?

Yes, the sound that gets momentarily louder in the last couple of seconds of the audio-clip

EDIT: Or maybe not a ringing noise, the noise that sounds like there is an exhaust in the engine bay. Like a "puffing" noise? Noises are hard to describe..

Sounds like something is blowing to me rather than knocking: broken exhaust, cracked manifold, missing glow plug, loose injector, cracked block, piston ring gone...

First thing I'd do is make a stethoscope from a length of tube and find where the noise is actually coming from.

I actually did this, but I couldn't really find the exact spot of the sound. But it was definitely situated near where the manifold connects to the engine..

Thanks for the answers guys :) Maybe I'll have to make a better stethoscope

EDIT: Also, I tried getting my dad to temporarily block the exhaust-pipe so I could look/listen for leaks in the engine bay, but nothing really changed..

no need to make one use a long screwdriver holding the handle to your ear :D:D:D

Here's a picture of someone else's engine (not a perfect match to mine, I have a different air-filter++) where I've marked where the sound appears to be situated... Any thoughts?

at the end of the engine where youve shaded the picture in is where you will have the crack in the exhaust manifold its the rusty one under the aluminium inlet manifold you will have to remove these items to find the crack

first though while the engine is running squirt a little soapy water round the injector on the other side of the engine to make sure its not chugging out of there
