is the cylindrical finned piece of kit up front a fuel cooler? If so... so i really need it?

As i love running on WVO etc and my intention is to convert the L series freebie to run on it comfortably, surely i dont want this?!

or am i being spastimicated

i've search for freelander fuel cooler etc but cant find much.

seems daft for me to install a heated fuel filter for it to cool the returned fuel! would be beneficial to have warm fuel going back to the tank :)
 
there are some heat insulation foams in aerosol that you could spray on the fuel lines to prevent heat loss, especially under the car.
don't know how it is with your MOT rules but might be worth investigating...
 
It actually cools the fuel being returned to the tank from the injection pump, not sure what the temperature rating is for the Freelanders plastic fuel tank
 
Ambient temp should cool it enough. If I lived in a warm country maybe it would be an issue.
The thing is the fuel gets fairly hot when it passes through the injection pump & the pressure control valve is on the outlet of the pump. Parked on the M25 on a typically blistering summer day (lol !) at idle for long periods where most of the fuel is going back to the tank it might be an issue.
Can you post feedback when you have done it & let us know how it goes, I'm all for removing unnecessary bits ;)
 
after a 20 mile run the fuel return hose was at 34 degrees c according to my thermometer :)

alot of that could be from ambient heat within the engine bay.
 
an update on this

did a 300 mile trip yesterday, fuel return line was 38 degrees when i got in. (according to the same thermometer)

as it was a hot day, im quite confident now that removal of the fuel cooler will not cause any issues.
