Hi can anyone advise? i have a freelander td4 that gives off a lot of smoke from the engine bay in the cold months it attracts alot of unwanted attention from concerened passer bys :(, i can see the smoke coming from a small exhaust under the car and am told its the diesel burner that maybe in need of replacing with a recon unit for a quote of 5 to 6 hundred quid!!! is it common? is it ignored as typical td 4 or is it wallet time can anyone advise please?

Hi thanx for reply i think its grey colour like exhaust fumes
 
Is it a night heater like you get on trucks? Like a secondary auxiliary heater that you get in colder climates. Where about do you live and can you get a picture f whet you think needs replacing and the exhaust that the smoke comes from. The night heater that's fitted to my truck at work can give off whitish smoke when it first starts up in a morning

i live in sheffield it only happens when the engine is cold and will cut off after a short while it is accompanied by a motor like noise as if something is running even when engine off and ignition off :confused:

its a "fuel burning heater" fitted to some to help pre heat the engine or with an extra kit heat your car for when you get in on a cold morning!
as for the smokin search is your friend!!!!
 
Its a webasto FBH they were fitted to bmw engined freelanders as standard to start with , but then they were made an option on all models except the top ones like premium ES , If its emitting a lot of smoke its probably got an ignition problem , They are switched automatically by a temp sensor behind front bumper, usually around freezing temp ambient . they then speed up warm up , and will go off when heating system reaches and maintains a set temp, if engine idles for long period in really cold weather , engine temp drops and fuel burning heater will re activate. HTSH
 
A bit of smoke is ok, if it's belching like a VW then you could think about giving it a clean inside the combustion chamber. They aren't difficult to work on so long as you avoid damaging the gauze or glow pin inside the combustion unit.

That's a good link to explain the strip down, it's for a boat but the heater is the same.

At least yours is working, mine wasn't when I bought it and it needed a new combustion unit... But even new it smokes a little when starting up - it's diesel after all.
