whats the valve clearances for me tratter 10j diesel engine as they sound really rattley to me and could be a contribution to me smoke problem :confused:

any advice welcome as long as i dont have to check and clean the injectors again as theyre perfect and the pump timing is spot on ;););)

was gonna say 10 thou, but thats lucas dizzy points.
think its 20 thou engine hot or cold. just tryin to visualise the plate thats rivited to the rocker box top!

Make sure you check the rocker pads for wear , as it can seriously affect the clearance if they are badly dented !!!

With number 1 valve fully open set tappet number 8
With number 2 valve fully open set tappet number 7
With number 3 valve fully open set tappet number 6
With number 4 valve fully open set tappet number 5
With number 5 valve fully open set tappet number 4
With number 6 valve fully open set tappet number 3
With number 7 valve fully open set tappet number 2
With number 8 valve fully open set tappet number 1

can i be cheeky and ask if theres any way to restrict its fuel flow as its supping like father jack and smoking its taters off but got verry good clean injectors and had new filters throughout with new glowplugs :D:D:D

0.010" (ten thou) hot or cold. Set em soon it makes a difference
was right first time then. are the pionts 8 thou? know there lower, but its ages since i worked the petrol.
surprised you've not heard the add to 9 jonny!

you can use "on the rock method "which is when both rockers on one cylinder are both open ,on the rock because one going up the other down but when equall you set opposite cylinder ,1 on the rock set both valves on 4 ,4 on the rock set 1 ,same with 2 and 3

used to use the on the rock method with me mini i just never heared of the add to 9 thing

BTW can anyone tell me how to restrict the fuel flow to the engine as i took it out of the back yard at 6 this morning and round to the front drive seeing as the roads were dead due to all the roadworks and diversions im in a little half mile radius pod where theres no other cars

looked in the mirror and there was no road just black smoke like its overfuelling badly

you cant just wind a screw to reduce fueling on pump its done internally ,pumps normally reduce output through wear not increase it ,id look at injectors ,looking clean or even just replaced means nothing ive often see them adjusted to the wrong crack off pressure and fail shortly after been done .cant you borrow some to try, dont forget injector is sealed by 2 washers ,bottom one stopping nozzle overheating and so failing amongst sealing

you can test or at least get an idea by fitting injector on the pipe upside down so you can see if pattern/atomisiation is good ,135 bar is crack off pressure ,its adjusted by slackening top cap nut and screwing adjuster in to increase and out to decrease pressure ,it just tensions spring sat on needle ,apart from checking pattern when testing injector you hold pressure just below crack off point and check for leakage

It's the pressure that they actually fire the diesel into the cylinder at. You need a test rig and calibration fluid to set em up there's instructions in the Series III manual on page 19-26. Think you will have to fork out to get them tested and calibrated.

Does sound to me like the pump is overfuelling. You can't just reduct fuel to the distributor pump as it will want more (a lot more) when accelerating than idling.

I don't know the land rover CAV pump but on my old bus that has a CAV/minimec there is an excess fuel mechanism for starting up it's a button that pops in on the throttle cable mechanism shaft. You click it in to start cold. When I first got my bus that used to stick sometimes and make lovely thick black smoke. Don't know if landy has a cold start mechanism the book's a bit thin on the pump side of things.
