If you,re getting air in the clear pipe then thats the first job to sort. You'll have to work your way backwards till you find the leak. A little bit of air will make it hiccup but sounds like its drawing a lot of it

Checked all relays and fuses, all ok. Listened at fuel filler cap ( heard nothing ). Camshaft turns ok. When turning on the ignition the clear pipe fills in seconds. when I turn it over it tries to start but kicks unburnt diesel smoke out. Afterward when I look at the clear pipe half the fuel has gone. Its not leaking from the pipes or filter, so where is it going ( out of the exhaust ? ) if so why does the pipe not stay filled ? It still says on the fault codes that there is a fault on the glow plug duration, if I clear it it comes back on again the next time I check. It is a 2001
Did you bridge the relay with the ignition on? If you hear nothing the pump is pooped.

That clear pipe shouldn't empty. There should be so much fuel the excess goes round the leak off pipes and back to the tank.

When bridging the fuel (lift) pump relay you should get something like 125mL in 30 seconds. Details in Wammers' post in the Technical Section. If you've got less than that the lift pump is giving up or clogged with bacterial growth from veg-oil or similar. Or maybe bad earth somewhere.

Just checked Wammers post in the Technical Archive and it is 180 mL of fuel in 10 seconds with +12V on position 5 of relay 12.

I can hear the pump working when I turn the ignition on , after the clear pipe goes down about 4 inches.
Removed the intake pipe on the filter and put the end in a bottle, fuel came through but nowhere near 180ml. it seemed more like dribble than a gush.

Usual places island, paddock spares, eBay even etc. Id shop about as prices seem to vary.
As Mark says get a VDO unit, I know they are more expensive but the cheaper ones have proven to be pretty much useless. likely need new bits for the connectors too, the olives and that sometimes on the kit sometimes not.
Well pointed out dt, new olives as well. ;)

I think you ought to put some pictures up. A lovely looking example there.

@tomcat59alan: a side issue, that big fuse for the glowplugs, is it under the engine ECU? I thought it was in the ECU box but I opened the lid and it wasn't immediately obvious. Nanocom showed only glow-plug heater fault.

Sorry been busy, yes it's there with the timer relay IMMIC, sounds like his problem is the fuel pump depending on the level of fuel in the tank.easy to check power at the glow plugs and the cut out solenoid with a test lamp.Did the OP crack off the injectors to check he had fuel up to them?

Atleast you don’t have brake lines to do you shouldn’t have them behind the tank ;)

On the early cars the two rear lines both go to the center of the rear cross member, the later ones have one pipe for the rear passenger caliper that runs all the way across the cross member, can both can be done with tank in bur a lot lot easier if tank is out.

No need. Turned the ignition and apparently only a dribble of diesel came out of the pipe for the filter. You can hear the lift pump but it doesn't sound like mine!

First and foremost I want to thank Grrrrr for going out of his way to call at my house and put his Nanocom on the car.
I have bought a new fuel pump and I shall have a go at fitting it tomorrow.
Thanks to all who have helped me sort it out. I sincerely hope I am able to return the favour.

No problem. Not that it helped much.

As Brian says it might be worth replacing the rubber between fuel filler neck and tank. It certainly makes it easier if you're dropping the tank. While the tank is out check the brake lines over the rear cradle part. Pump should come with new olives; if not it might be worth getting a few.
