What is the key for ?

If you look at the pic of your pulley you can just see the hole has a slot in.
There will be 1 on the shaft of the alternator, it locks them together better.

Check under that bit of protective cardboard on your new alternator it might already have 1.

Thanks will have a look.

I have not asked them yet, but when I asked if the alternator and starter motor would fit a military engine they said they couldn't be sure as they don't sell military stuff.
Ive just googled it and this part number
568788
is for 2.25 petrol or diesel.

Like what he says^^^^^^. There is a slot on the taper on the alternator, and a slot in the pulley, and there should be a key that goes in the slots to prevent any turning of the pulley on the taper.
Very often, the key is actually wedged in the slot on the taper, but not always, so make sure it is there so you can order one with the pulley if it isn't.

, There is one on Alt, and looks like a gap in pics of pulleys advertised to slot it in to, but no mention of key. here is pic of my Alt .
Is this key a separate thing ?

Sorry to hear that Mate, , what a nightmare of a job is to change clutch, glad you've nearly got it done.
Hope Ive put my bloody clutch in right, its the first time Ive fitted one on my own.

Please excuse me but I just cant figure out how this alt bracket fits Has anyone got a pic of it fitted ? cant find one anywhere on google.
I thought it went through this bit on first pic, but it does not seem to fit on there. This is alternator I have.

You already have a bracket fitted behind the pully looks like for a dynamo same as the engine I'm working on...

Sorry no this a ground up resto I'm doing for a client/friend and haven't started on engine yet and he wants to keep it original with dynamo...

Mine Was military with everything 24 volt, but took them off and replacing with 12 volt, so think I need this bracket for 12 volt Alternator if I can figure out where it goes.

Have you tried alt on the bracket fitted to engine?...you need long bolts and a bar that goes up to head...I'll dig out bits that I took off tomorrow and photo...the pully on the alt has to line up with crank pully and the bracket fitted to your engine wont come off without removing crank pully...
