I know this has been covered before,
but I am looking for some up to date information on what is best to purchase, there are several price ranges..

1. £10-£100
Elm327 FAULT CODE READER
Autel MaxScan GS500
2. £101-£175
Land Rover MS509 Code Scanner
3. £176-£250
Bearmach Hawkeye Diagnostic Fault Code Tool
4. £251-1000
Bearmach Hawkeye Diagnostic Fault Code Tool

To be honest I am really only looking for something that will read codes and delete them,
so I can tell what is new and what is historical..

What have you used that works, and would recomend??

Thanks in advance..

The Hawkeye is the only one to do pretty well everything - it has the Landrover programme in it.

I have a small £50 Autel that Rovet Ron recommended - it's neat cheap and useful but only reads and deletes basic codes.

For example if your SRS light comes on only the Hawkeye will put it out.

If you have the finances go Hawkeye and you have a tool designed for the job. Having said that my Autel will read and delete codes on a variety of cars and has been used to do so. Not sure if Hawkeye can be used on other cars - I am pretty sure it cannot.

Faultmate MSV2 ??

i have one for my Range rover and its a good bit of kit.

might be too advanced though if you only want to reset and clear codes

Thanks for the replies guys,
its more about cost for me,
I know the Freelander is known in some parts (OK All)
to have things going wrong all the time,
but I don't intend to use it too often (Fingers Crossed)

I would love the Hawkeye but at the price it is I just cannot justify it,,
and again the Faultmate MSV2 is of a similar price to the Hawkeye..

Might just have to go for the more simple one for now and maybe save for a
better one if the ownership looks like its set for a few years,,
only had the Freelander since early October, so a bit early to say how long
the ownership will be at the moment..

Hopefully a few more replies and I can settle on one between £10-£100..

in this range the Autel MaxScan GS500 sounds favourite so far..
I think a hand held would be easier to use than a lap top based system,,

I have a laptop system for my other car and its a paint to set it all up sometimes..
as it needs a RS2 port and is so old it needs extension leads to work..

I also thought I would only get a cheapy - then I saw a Scanguage2 - and thought - that's for me!

It's now permanently connected to the OBD port and sits nicely in front of the steering wheel in front of the instruments - a clever and useful gizmo.

No regrets in buying it.

Reports codes when they occur and clears them easily.

No probs in checking other vehicles too.

The usual hawkeye peeps buy is about £300. There's also a newer one which is more eggspensive. Make sure you know what it's licensed to do. The £300 option needs additional licenses if you plan to use it on more than one LR.

Don't go wasting money on a usb elm327 odbii like I did for about £80 thinking it's from a good supplier and must be the propper thing. It is, but should have cost nearer £15.

My freelander is a 31/03/2003 does it have OBD2??

Or am I OBD1 or something completely different??

Well just an update,,
I am a man for the moment so i have just plumped for one of these,,

AUTEL MAXSCAN GS500 OBD2/EOBD,
new prices are about £80 and I got mine for £33 including P&P..

Lets just hope it works...

Apparently the Freelander is a ISO / KWP system so this should be OK ..
If not I will have to try it out on my car instead..

and does it work ??????????

if so what can it do ?
is it just to reset codes or can it read live data too ?

For what it's worth, I bought a Rovacomlite with a couple of software modules (Multi vehicle) in 2002 for my P38 after being ripped off by main stealers and also giving me the option to sort problems out "On the spot". I then decided to buy the complete multi vehicle software for the P38 and upgraded my Rovacomlite to the then newly released Faultmate Extreme. I helped many Landyzone members and others out over the years until I decided to hang up my boots. The kit paid for itself many times over and I sold it to another Landyzone member for a good price (To me) a couple of years ago. BBS do a single vehicle package which will have all the software you need for your model. In my opinion it outperforms the dealer Testbook, T4 etc. and is easy to use. If the owner changes the car for the same model, the software can be relicenced for a small charge. If you sell the car, the kit is an attractive selling point and you should still be able to recoup most, or all of the cost.

Wow that does look the dogs danglies mate,,
But its more than I paid the Freelander..
thanks anyway someone may read this thread and want one..

Well I just took the Autel MaxScan GS500 out to the Freelander,
Plugged it in and she came to life, all systems go,
I first ran it with no ignition to get the no connection message
so I could tell if it was working properly once the engine was running,
as I hoped it said no connection available,
did this again with the ignition on and all worked, connected and
scanned all the systems for errors old and new,
Now either it is missing something or there is nothing stored in the memory
and none present on current test..being slightly unsure if it was actually reading
I did the live data, and it showed several things,
I need to work out what they are,
so I suppose in summary this scanner reads codes and erases them from history
and current, reads live data, and I will test it one day by unplugging something and
seeing if it picks up on it, something like the Maff would be a good place to start..
so for the money I payed I am more than happy with it..;)

Pre 2004 Td4s did not have to be OB2 compliant, most readers will interface with pre 2004 models but will not read any of the codes or live data as it LR locked software, so unless people are willing to pay the price of hawkeye or the like you can not access the data.

Glad to hear you are happy so far

What live data an it read ??

Does anbody know if there is a LR code reader that does the same thing as DIS or INPA do with BMW's ?
