Hi

I have a problem with my 98 xedi. There is a metalic "whering"/rubbing noise coming from front of car. It sounds more harsh when accelerating hard and at low revs/speed is not noticeable. In another post it has been suggested that it may be gear box or front diff oil.

I dont have the skill or tools to investigate. Does anybody know a good garge in derby/burton area, that knows what they are on about? I have taken it to a couple who have been stumped?! or does anybody fancy a look at it for me?! Can't tell you how much it would mean if somone could give me some pointers as have just had baby and funds aren't high at the mo!

Thanks Rob

If your funds are low then you won't be wanting to get ripped off at a garage. You could buy a haynes manual and a cheap socket set for the price of an hours labour. Download the RAVE cd.

Checking oil levels in the diffs and gear box is easy, make sure the car is level, undo the filler plug with a socket and see if the oil runs out, if not fill it until it starts to run out then wait for it to stop and put the plug back in.

If the oil is ok then remove the props and VCU and drive it in 2wd, if this cures the problem then one of your diffs is probably goosed. You can run a freelander in 2wd no problems.

If you have not got alot of money then it is best to learn how to fix your own car, its not hard so don't be daunted, if you get stuck then just ask for help on the forum.

On a more simple note it could be the brake disc cover scraping or a stone jammed between the disc cover and the disc, very common. Just have a look at both front brake discs.
