It isn't that bad, seriously.

The collets are steel. You're not going to damage them as you're only pushing and they can take some abuse. You're more likely to damage the 2 little black nitrile o-rings inside. They're freely available for little money on eBay. Similarly, if you need collets I'd look on eBay for some off a scrapper.
