Any views on the relative merits of a Delica, Pajero or Bighorn as a towcar?

Whichever, they would be around 95 to 97 vintage automatic diesel.

Delica, Heheheheh. Laughable. If you get one, take the bullbars off,
they make them look (even more) stupid.

Pajero, Not bad all-round, but has IME limited space and carrying
capacity. The engines are under-powered for full loads and towing, IMO.

Bighorn, thirsty.

Yebbut it's essentially a Pajero with an MPV body, so as a tow car they
are probably the same. Buggrit if anyone cared about looks they wouldn't
be buying any 4x4.

They are used by a bunch of people what I know. I can't say that they
are underpowered, one of them was clocked at 115mph (true speed) so they
shift well enough, and they are used to pull some serious loads. The big
problem seems to be that they can't carry much of a load internally. If
the load space is full, the vehicle is damn close to being overweight.
And with VOSA now able to stop any vehicle they think may be overweight,
they could be stopping Pajero drivers regularly knowing that four people
+ luggage = overweight.

Rough, bollocking awful ride, but essentially rugged.

I think any of them would do as a towcar but of the lot I'd take the
Bighorn. I'd also have a look at some Yank tanks. At least you'll get
self-levelling suspension with them. Go for a Dodge Ram, you'll not even
notice that the 5.7 hemi is towing anything.

Doubt if I could afford the fuel or insurance, though

People get hysterical about fuel costs, but it's not the be all and
end-all of the costs of running a vehicle that people make out. I bought
an Explorer for farm/towing use. It's a big petrol engine, 20-24mpg. A
lot of people have told me that I should have bought a diesel, but the
economics don't work out in favour of the diesel.

Diesel costs more, a disel engien vehicle is only more economical if it
is small and relatively underpowered compared to the equivalent petrol
engine - a Discovery 2.5Tdi would be slightly more economical than my
Explorer, but the Disco is an arthritic heap that can barely pull skin
off rice pudding, and you can't cruise all day at 95-100mph on the
autobahn as I can in the Explorer.

And you can pick up a Yank tank for £2-6k with low mileage and FSH with
an equivalent diesel vehicle costing about twice as much. The money you
spend on fuel is more than eaten up by the depcreciation of the diesel
vehicles.

And diesels stink.

Now that the company Exploder has been properly fixed (new short motor in
the end, gulp!!) and the LPG computer properly tuned, it flies, with
respectable mpg too. Is doing equivilent of 32-35mpg on gas.

Very refined high speed cruiser, and quick off the mark from all that torque
despite not huge bhp from the 4 litres.

Having the engine fixed did show up that even Ford have problems in getting
some parts- were waiting 2 weeks for a gasket kit...

Tim.
