Defenders - An Appreciating Asset?

I have noticed a stagnation or even drop in price for the older/entry level defenders, the arse has really dropped out of the Disco 1 and 2 market.

I took some fairly bad verbal abuse last year for something l posted and l found it fairly offensive
However l showed it to my missus recently as l missed being on this forum (it’s the best one) and she laughed her sides out at it so l guess l over reacted !

I think they have been dropping for a while as people are starting to twig theres never ever going to be a shortage of 90/110/defenders.

Give it 20 odd years and the prices will start to climb again, look at the s2 really going up and even the s3 are going up. as people get priced out of the earlier cars.

But as others have mentioned, there's no shortage of defenders but you do need to know what you're looking at otherwise you could be caught out with a pile of crap underneath a nice shiny exterior.

I have a few customers who have bought into a Defender due to the hype and “appreciating asset” talk, but then sold it on after driving it for a while

The latest swapped his very nice looking TD5 for a Discovery 3.

Many people like the idea of a Defender as a daily driver, but it’s a bit of a shock after a Nissan Juke.

Absolutely. They are a style of motoring similar to that most people were used to in the 1970s.

Nothing wrong with them as such, but very few people actually have any reason to own or drive one, other than that they want to.

Exactly, I really do enjoy driving my 90 for some reason.
Here's another thing, I have a French mate who takes the pee out of the 90, he has a nice shiny 3 year old Citroen something or other.
Now last year the Doris and I were heading back after a few days away in the mountains, just started a 300 Km journey when the alternator died, checked it wasn't getting hot and just carried on, got home in daylight no problem. Don't think his Citroen would have done that.

It probably wouldn't. At the very least, the computer would have told it the alternator wasn't charging, and put it into limp mode.

The way modern cars use power, you are right he would have got 50 miles at best.
 
Another vote for loving using the defender. I get no enjoyment from my Audi but the Defender, that’s proper enjoyment territory!:):):)

I never enjoy driving modern cars. My top cars that I've driven and loved are Classic Mini Cooper, 1968 Ford Mustang GT, MGBGT, Vauxhall Nova GTE, any pre-Defender/Series. Basically cars you have to work at driving and you feel like you are integral to the vehicle, not just a passenger. The Newest car I ever owned was a '16 Hyundai Tucson, it was alright, but boring.
 
All the pre 2000 Defenders I've looked at have been ruined by rust. Especially out here in Suffolk where the farmers don't take care of them properly and then want 8000 quid for their rusted heap. :eek:
