Defender Wipers- help needed

I've also checked the wiring at the switch end and the motor end, and checked the earth. this morning i used the washer jet to clean the windscreen and the wipers went mental and wouldn't turn off. Then the pump stopped altogether, and the wipers have calmed down. Could a faulty pump have caused the 'automatic wipers'?

Please help, they're driving me mad.
