I fitted a new drivers side wiper box on my Defender, In January of this year. The old box seemed to be seizing up and was clicking and under sweeping. It was a bit of a pain to change.

Pretty much from the start, the new wiper box overswept the bottom and side edges of the screen, but at least the clicking noise has gone away.

Now the wipers oversweep the screen more, and I'm worried the grub screw is loose. None of my Alan keys seem to fit the grub screw any more and the rubber shroud has already almost fell apart with the cracks in it.
This is all in 4 months. I had bought Britpart PRC8495 unfortunately not the gen version, although there was very little cost difference in it.

So. Can anyone recommend a decent replacement wiper box? Should I chance a G suffix Brtipart one, or has anyone used Bearmach or Allmakes?

I don't want to take the dash out a third time.

I had a bit of a saga with the wiper boxes on my Defender 90. Firstly fitted the Bearmach ones. They have crappy aluminium nuts. One of them stripped and the wiper box started clicking and eventually gave up. Replaced both with Britpart none G. I ended up taking them both back as the shaft started rotating within the cog virtually as soon as they were used. Swapped them both for one of the Britpart G versions (the G version was double the price I paid for the none G). So I currently have 1 x Britpart G version on the passenger side and 1 x Bearmach on the drivers side. The Bearmach one clicks and overtravels. The Britpart G one is solid, silent with no overtravel. I've no experience of the Allmakes ones. I will shortly be purchasing a Britpart G Wiper Box and taking the dash out again. Hope that helps.

Yep, that helps. I thought I had ordered a "g" part but just checked the order history and it wasn't.

I'll get a new G one and refit. Thanks.

The cheap ones really aren't bothering with.

I fitted a pair that were barely any better than the wandering, random sweep ones I took off.

That said my wiper problems weren't fully cured after fitting Gs until I also changed the drive spring

This is interesting.

I'm rebuilding at the moment and fitted wipers yesterday.....new cable, new bearmach boxes. It took a bit of messing to get it to fit, and there seems to be a bit of resistance when manually operating the cable. I thought it was going to be a 5 min job, so I wonder if its due to parts being off

I've not got and electrics in yet but maybe I can wire up just the the wipers and see.

I'll be a bit annoyed if the wiper box is rubbish.....as I specifically made sure I got bearmach.....that said I had an issue with a clutch slave pipe last week from bearmach.....completely wrong shape.....they're sending me a replacement out

Thanks guys, I'm not blue box bashing here, I just should have got G suffix parts to start with.

Just getting a bit sick of doing things twice?....

There will be a fair bit of resistance on the wheel boxes, it does not necessarily mean they are no good. It is worth checking them before you put the dash all in.

DEFINITELY DO NOT BUY BEARMACH WHEEL-BOXES!!!!

Just bought 2 from Foundry 4x4 and they are the worst copy of an OEM part that I have ever seen!
The rack tubes will not fit correctly and the rack gets jammed once the back plate is fitted. If it hadn't been for the fact that i had to destroy my old ones I would have sent them back for a refund! Definitely not 'fit for purpose' !
After a few hours of cursing and trying all-sorts to get the things working, I ended up removing the drive gear/spindle and swapping them into the old genuine wheel-boxes, and what should have been an hours job took 5!!!

Flipping Nora. Tried to remove the old knurled bit and change it for a spare one, as it had worked loose. Had to drill out the Allen key grub screw as it was completely rounded off. This is after the new wheel box had been fitted for two months. Will never buy non G parts again. Still got to change the wheel box for a new one to stop the wiper sweeping off the screen at either end of the sweep.

G suffix wheel box now fitted and appears to be working correctly, it's amazing how similar they look to the non g part, except for the fact they don't work, and don't fit properly. The G one was much easier to fit too.
