Defender wind deflectors

Hi all,

I have wanted some wind deflectors for some time, and picked up some Terrafirma ones for the defender. I am somewhat disappointed to see that they... stick on the outside of the door panel!?

I was hoping for some that fitted into the window and were seamless. Save me wasting any more money, can anyone recommend wind deflectors that DO NOT stick on to the car. Or do they all do that?

I have a problem with mine, might help you out though.
I had decided it would be a jolly weeze to try some deflectors on my 90, wasn't sure if they would be any good though down to the general shape of the rather square windscreen/door top corner. So with that in mind I bought a cheap set from Paddocks, and yes they were Britparts finest. When they arrived I was quite surprised to see they were supplied with 3M adhesive tape, cleaned up the door top with some meths and put the deflector in place.
They do work well, both for minimising draft and rain, but I wish I could change mine, I hadn't read the description properly and the ones I bought were tinted, this means I have trouble seeing things at a distance because they are in my eye line looking out the window.
The 3M tape is very strong and would involve repainting the door top if I got them off. The plus side is I can park up in the sun with the windows down just a bit to be just that little bit cooler and you can't see that the window is open.

Had mine fitted for getting on for 10-years now with no problems.
When you first fit them you will find the glass a little reluctant to fully close but the felt soon adapts to the deflector and the window closes fully again.
I was worried that they may become brittle over time and crack when they are removed / refitted (you have to bend them to fit) but I have had them off a number of times and they have been fine.

If there is an issue with them it is that they obscure part of the mirror.
This wasn't an issue for several years as I had Spafax mirrors fitted and they sit further back (see second photo). It was only when I went back to the (large) OE style that I noticed it. That said it isn't so much of an issue that I have decided to go back to the other mirrors.

I've had the the stick on ones for at least 5 years, maybe longer, they work well (IMO) and once on won't come off.

What did you think of the spafax mirror? I have debated fitting some for ages

Thank you - this was the reply i needed - Ugh same adage - buy once, cry once! I will get some of them. PS - That defender looks awesome!
Thanks to the other replies about stick on - I am sure it is strong, but I really did not want that , I was sure it would last well, but I like the neat clean look, and its going in for a respray next year anyway.

Not certain about them hence why they have now been on / off a couple of times (currently sitting in bubblewrap in the garage).

Generally they are good and slightly bigger than the standard LR heads so if you have always used the standard head it will be a bonus. For me, as I have always used the large heads they appeared slightly smaller than what I had been used to but all in all not an issue.
They do sit further back than standard which may or may not take some getting used to, for me however it meant they suited the deflectors perfectly.
They mount very firmly. Although I have never experienced it myself some people say the large mirror heads tilt at speed whereas these clamp onto the ball-joint with teeth so cannot move when set.
The heating elements work well and they clear as quickly as my normal mirrors (I fitted stick-on heating elements 20-years ago).
The biggest issue is the view at night. Being unbreakable they are not glass so the image is not as crisp but at night they give the impression of a ghost image (think anti-glare interior mirror) so it is for that reason they have now been on / off a couple of times.

I don't dislike them enough to get rid completely but when they are off I miss them and when they are on I end up thinking I prefer the original style.

I have these on my Defender and they have been brilliant, not sure if they were standard fitting on my 90XS, but they were on when I bought the Landy at two years old, now 17 years old and they are still perfect, they are fitted in the window channel. I think it says Climair on the sticker.

Another vote for the Climair ones. I had them on my old disco 1 and despite lots of greenlaning and branch contact, they stayed put! They were the ones that fit inside the window channel. They did help keep the window clear of rain and made it much better driving with the windows open.
