Defender TDi Starting Problems

Hiya, my Defender intermitently won't start, the ECU has been tested and its fine, I put the keys in the igniton but the pre-heat and the engine management lights (amber on the dash) dont light, it will turn over but not start - if I take the keys out and start again it will then fire up. Also occasionally the engine managemnt light will flick on and she misses a beat but carrys on running - can anyone help or give me some ideas? Thanks Lauren

what year is your landy? TDI defenders don't have an ECU other than the egr valve. I'm guessing that it's a TD5.
 
Hiya, thank you for getting back to me, your right its a TD5 (too much cider......) or just being blonde................. its a 2002
 
First off I'd check the earth strap under the drivers seat. I'd also give all the fuses and relays a wiggle as they are prone to rattling loose or getting dodgy connections due to dirt/corrosion.
 
Thanks Ratty, I'll try that tomorrow, earth strap I can do and fuses, which relays anyone inparticular? I'll go through them all - THX L
