Hi guys not normally here but have a problem with one of our Defenders its a 110 with a TD5 engine .
Starts on the button runs perfectly when in the bush and on back roads, But the minute you approach 3000 revs it stutters almost like a limiter, speed drops of and at about 2600 revs its back to normal.

We dont have a workshop set up yet and our resident mechanic wont be in camp for another 3 weeks but we need to use the 110 to get to outlying villages,

1 So from my description is it serious 2 can we continue to use without F ucking it or 3 does anyone have a cure. and before you ask we dont have a code reader.

I did not know where to put this here or in engines if its in the wrong place can you move it for me BB

Dont know it was here when we got in country 2 weeks ago one of our nurses noticed it first and it happened to me last night the other TD5 revs freely
 
I'd check all the usual Td5 suspects, oil contamnation in the red plug in the ECU, contamination in the fuel filter(s) and also the pump.
You say you don't have a workshop set up yet so going any further into the engine, such as replacing the injector seals is probably not possible, nor is any live data from a code reader, 'cos you've already said you don't have one.
I don't think that keeping the revs below 2500 will do much harm to the engine, but keep a close eye on the fluid levels, oil and coolant for any inexplicable sudden changes.
 
I'd check out the fuel filter first as it sounds like it's short of fuel. If it ain't that it could be the lift pump in the tank playing up. If you can hear the lift pump from the seat, has it changed note and got noisier? They often (but not always) do that before they fail, a loss of fuel pressure and shortage of fuel when the engine is under load is another symptom.
 
Sounds to me like a loss of boost pressure between the turbo and the inlet manifold. Runs ok up to a certain pressure and then lets go - had that on my puma once, it was a small split in one of the hoses which was able to hold the pressure but as soon as it went over 60mph or under anything more than light acceleration the split would open and the engine lost most of the boost temporarily.
 
With the defender TD5 as the ECU is a long, long way from the engine, things have got to be quite bad before the oil reaches it from the injector loom. I usually check mine at the multiplug where the injector wires go into the cylinder head.

Also, it it very dusty in your neck of the woods? Worth having a look at the state of the air filter too. Does the turbo wastegate move freely? I'm just thinking about other things that might be choking it off at high revs.
 
Thanks lads I will be getting dirty tomorrow checking your suggestions. will let you know how get on looking at the diesel storage and the tanker that delivers it I think its going to be shi t in the system contributing to the problem.
 
Waste gate stuck would be high on my list - it hits over 1.4 bar and goes into limp mode..... Mine needs freeing off regularly these days, must try graphite instead of oil...? Good luck, A
 
The Story so far , fuel filter is a Mahle type and when you look in the holes at the top looks like dirty cotton wool and its very heavy compared to the spare we have, so have changed that also drained tank full of shi t, fuel filler has a removable wire filter that has been damaged god knows where we get that probably from the company that tropicalised it.
Going to fill tank and see how we go.

Well tank cleaned out fuel filter changed oil and air filter changed . The problem persists next job check the waste gate , any tips or cheats to make this as easy as possible.

Sounds like a fuel pressure or delivery problem to me. Next time it does it pull to the side and take the fuel cap off. If it hisses then your fuel breather is blocked causing a vacuum in the tank. If not then you need to check the fuel pressure at the regulator. it should be around 4 bar under load. If it reads OK at idle but tails off with increased engine speed then you have a lazy fuel pump or partially clogged fuel filter or fuel lines. If fuel pressure is all good then you may have a turbo boost leak which a simple boost gauge will reveal. Boost should be up to 1.2 bar constant under load.
 
Managed to get to it again and low and behold it was as suggested the waste gate sticking its as good as gold now no problems at all . the one other thing we have initiated is we made an inline filter for the diesel storage tank after seeing the state of both it and the tanker that feeds us.
