afternoon... just thought I would vent my frustrations, by telling anyone who needs a laugh, how I’ve spent 4hrs trying to remove the front axle drive flanges.... seized solid, all the way along the complete length of the spline...

Yesterday dropped the axle and suspension off... not easy as every nut and bolt fought me... and those that didn’t had been rounded off by some baboon!...

anyway thought I would crack on and strip it down...... pulled the dust cover off to get access to drive flange circlip, only to find circlip rusted solid, snapped when tried to remove with circlip pliers... removed what was left and the shim, and cleaned up the bare spline, then tapped the flange left and right to loosen/rotate.... no movement... so tried again a little harder... eventually I just thrashed it.... had some movement, so then tapped it with a chisel to shift it axially along the spline... then a little harder.. rotating each time to move evenly... then thrashed it... nothing!.... so sprayed some penetrating oil on it and walked away..

this morning tried again!.... in the end I had to disc cut very carefully circumferentially around the shoulder on the end drive flange, not the flange itself, just the shoulder where the circlip butts up to, then cut along it, and peel it off like an orange... the logic being this section is most likely the seized bit..... anyway it F’in wasn't, it was all seized... with the shoulder off there was less resistance, so set about driving it with a chisel... hurrah... 1935 hammer blows to the end of the chisel later.. And fair number on my thumb!.. and it came off...

and guess what... the other side was the just as bad....

I’ve seen hose bearmach youtube vids, where they just pull it off with their fingers!... mmmmmm

clearly i will need 2 new drive flanges, luckily i got away without inflicting any serious damage to the splines, but i reckon i may fit new CV's anyway....

up next, are the hub nuts, surely these can’t be seized as well!

does anyone know how the breather pipe comes off?, it looks like the fitting it jusst pressed into the axle casing, so was going to prise it up?

cheers all

24hrs in smiley faces... :):);):(:mad::mad::confused::eek::oops::oops::oops: oops!
