Hi

Im looking for some help if anyone can identify this noise. The noise only seems to happen when its in gear an i lift off the accelerator. I've tried the following thing but it still persists

Driven without the front propshaft (Still the same)
Driven without the rear propshaft (Still the same)
Built up speed then put in neutral and coasted (No noise)
Removed both propshafts, run it all the gears (No noise)
Checked all the oil levels, Transfer, Diffs, Gear box
Checked both the propshafts
Checked the outputs on the transfer box for play

If you unwieght a wheel, and when in gear, rotate that wheel (by hand) is there a lot of slack ?
Does it go 'clonk' when you start of stop the rotation suddenly ?

With 1 wheel unwieghted, under the car (with the LT230 in neutral, wheels chocked) can you feel any difference rotating the prop shafts ?
Is the transfer box definately 'unlocked' when you are driving ?

If it's noisy on the overrun, it might be wear in the primary gearbox. My R380 got very noisy, especially when lifting off in 5th and 2nd when it was nearing the end of its life. As an additional way of narrowing down the problem, is the noise as bad in 4th? 4th gear effectively locks the input and output shaft together so the load isn't going through the cogs, so it's quieter. If that's the case, then very likely the noise is coming from the primary box. I fitted a reconditioned gearbox in January 2021 and it's been fine since. The new one has a little song in its heart, but nowhere near as noisy as the original one.

Have you changed the oil in the gearbox and transfer box?

My 2005 Defender TD5 made a screaming noise on the over run in fifth gear, l thought "new gearbox time...."

Changed the oil, noise disappeared, and that was 75,000 miles ago, all still fine.

i have a bit of rattle in nuetral pessing the clutch stops it i cant tell if it does it travelling only done it since fitting a lof clutch
oh check halve shafts and drive splines

I've got one of those. It seems to be something to do with the turret on the top of the gearbox and the transmission tunnel. So it's a 'surface' rattle rather than a 'deep' rattle, so I'm not too worried.

Mine does this to after fitting a lof clutch, however it’s hardly noticeable now after about 20k miles, was so Pi**ed off about it when first fitted though

No Clonking and ive probably got less than a 1/8 of a wheel rotation of slack. There doesn't seem to be any difference in the prop shafts

All gears but seems to be louder with increased speed

The oils were all changed last year, still clean and not like milkshake

Smith & Allan Geartech FS 75W-90 in the transfer box and diffs
Fair enough, but I’d try genuine Land Rover mtf 94 first before you condemn the box, my mechanic who is nuts about Land rovers will only put that in mine
