Defender TD5 15p Turbo / waste-gate settings for standard set up

Sorry guys.

I know there are several threads on this matter, but thats just the problem!

They all have different information, be grateful for the definitive - official answer!

Just replaced injectors and new waste-gate actuator on the TD5

What is the max boost I should be seeing under load for 'factory / standard setup'?

PSI / BAR / Kpa ?

Much more than 1.1bar and you will be triggering limp mode on full throttle unless you have a boost box to fool the ecu. I ran mine at 18psi with no issues. Get a decent boost gauge to keep an eye on things.

Standard is 14psi. Max before "overboost" is 18psi

Standard should be around 13 - 14 threads

Opinion and guess work is dangerous, as a little knowledge!

Just imagine if some poor bugger followed the advice below....

'A standard td5 turbo will make 28 psi'

Correct. A standard turbo will create up to 28psi -30psi of boost, however it wont last long and would require more than wastegate adjustment.

However standard boost is 14psi, you can happily set it to 18psi for a little extra poke with no ill effects

It will no doubt make even more if you put on on a bench! and direct cool air and super snake oil at/ into it

Which is great if the question was 'What is the max boost the garrett turbo can produce?'
But those figures were in response to someone asking about factory settings for a TD5 Defender,
(@sierrafery put them straight quick as a flash of course!)

Most car turbos, even small ones, can produce up to 30psi with no modifications. However this does not mean your engine can take those pressures or that your ecu will let you before going to limp mode to protect the engine. Increased turbo boost results in very high exhaust gas temps which warp manifolds and heads, snap manifold studs, and burn exhaust valve seats. I have seen the wastegate arm jammed shut with molegrips to get extra boost by somebody with no idea of how a turbo works and then wondering why their motor is constantly limping.
