My 87 300tdi has developed an interesting electrical fault....it still runs when you turn off the ignition and remove the key....that is until you press the horn or the brake......wot the?

Once turned off for a while, (key removed) the ignition lights come back on trigger the alarm or just drain the battery.

The battery is newish and it's just had a new starter motor

Totally stumped.....any ideas welcome.

Remove everything from round the ignition and check you don't have a short circuit. There is a similar thread on here where it ran with lights on after ignition on. Turn lights off it stops.

Good old defender electrics! Mine ran on after I had put the wrong bulb in the rear stop/side light! Put in a single pole bulb instead of double pole! So when the side lights were on, a live voltage went back through the brake light circuit to the ignition and to the ip stop solenoid so the engine kept running even with the ignition turned off!

Check you main alternator ing feed wiring if you have fitted a higher output alternator they sometimes tend to melt the lower rated wire that defenders/90's had and then stick the ign and guages can become all live. This can cause a fire!

Check it's unlikley But do check
