Just a quick one, have you thought about where your rear view mirror is going to fit and sun visors? Mine seem to be part of the headlining (110 van) although i havent attempted to investigate

rear view mirror its fine, as the console is cut to allow it to fit back in..
sun visors.... :doh: never thought of it!
bollocks... hope its not too wide, or else the sun visors will only be going up as high as where the console is!
right, just checked some pics, the sun visors almost touch eachother, so they'll only be going up as high as the console is, which i guess its something you have to live with with any console?

You could cut the end of the sun visors off and stick some sort of semi transparent sticker behind the rear view mirror.. how close together are the hinges on either end of the two visors?

the 1st pic of the ebay one from lrs dosnt show with sun visors either..great project enjoyed the read..suppose ply could also be used instead of metal,then carpeted..

Could you not make some new visors? I know it will probably be a ball ache but it's a shame to have them at a funny angle when you've done the hard work of making a nice console.

It kind of depends whether the roof console currently in production is too wide for the existing fixing points for the visor. I guess you could just drill new holes but I'm not sure where / what they attach to as i've never taken my headlining out.

From this picture it looks like your visor won't even be horizontal
On that pic, the console wasnt in its place, as the middle strut is still there, and the console goes a little higher, I used the sun visor to hold it so it wouldnt fall down.
here's a pic with it in its final place.

As far as the one you buy, I think its and ingenious (and expensive) solution to a problem that doesn't exist!
If you want a place to put a CB then just buy a Raptor dash and Pod if you want, plenty of space for gauges, switches, CB and a radio

The raptor consoles are ok but..
you have to cut the dash to fit the radio and I think you even have to cut the dash to fit the console?
with a roof console its four holes and its there, all you have to do is cut the roof lining, even easier if you dont have roof lining.
Plus.... if you fit loads of switches for roof lights, rear working lights, air lockers, etc, etc... its a pain to route a cable from the battery to the dash, or from roof lights as the space in the pillars is very reduced.
with a roof console you can easily get a cable out the battery box, behind the passenger or driver seat, along the side of the door and into the roof space.
All the lights would also have minimal cable lenghts and easy routes to get to the console..
when connecting a CB you dont have to try and squeeze that thick antenna cable through the pillar and behind the dash....
I see the console as having more advantages in terms of ease of connections, plus leaves the dash free to put all kinds of crap in there.
Of course that at £280 is just ridiculous, if and when I make these, I'll be selling for a lot less than that.

Fair point with cutting the dash, but I wouldn't pull it off if I was selling, because If I was selling mine for another defender I would simply buy myself a new one because they're so cheap in the first place, when I got mine it was £60, pretty much when it first came out, and even £85 now is bugger all for the quality your getting

But the good thing is.. roof consoles can be custom made
so it can be as big as you like the raptor dash is £85... I'll probably sell a roof console for £120... so for an extra 35 I think its best to get all the advantages of the roof console
not trying to get into a marketing argument, just personal opinion really... As you, I would never, ever pay 280 for a console, therefore the reason why i started doing mine, I wasnt even looking at buying one, just came across it on ebay and thought "280? fok that, I can build one"
