To be fair I didn't think it looked too bad. You don't want to be too worried unless theres alot more rot than the pics you've shown us. It does seem as though the garage can't be assed to do the welding.

after speaking to him ,I now know the garage is a well known lr dealer, parts etc so its a classic scare him, buy it for scrap, mend and resale bs it happens a lot

I went up to see pressbrake today and basically he could of patched it up but he said its pretty bad and it does need a new chasis, I think we will go ahead and bite the bullet.

Really apreciate you looking at it mate, thanks

sorry to here that. Go with a richards galvanized chasis. If you are unable to do this they have a garage to do the swap

Don't sell it, it would be a fair bit of work, but a new chassis will be a good investment. Some places can change a chassis on a Defender in no time. Make sure you get the new one treated (e.g waxoil or zinc paint). All the best.

If its a galvanised chasis does it still need treatment?

My galv chassis came from Richards, whilst a mate had one from Marslands.

Marslands are good because they deliver within the week, and also have adjustable tub mounts making it easier to align the bodywork. However they fit TD5 crossmembers as standard, meaning you have to buy a TD5 specific tow hitch which isn't cheap.

On the other hand, Richards use 2.5mm steel over 2mm, they will carry out any modification you want before galvansing (roll cage mounts, winch trays, different engine mounts etc) and when you speak to them on the phone, they are very nice guys that try to help you out. They had a lead time of about 8 weeks, but when I offered to collect it to save on the delivery and also pay in cash, they did me a very good deal :D

If you want a standard spec chassis, then you can buy a Richards chassis from Bearmach or Britpart (can't remember which) and have it within the week...but no cash discount.

All in all I was really pleased with mine, and my mate was pleased with his - it all depends what you are after and how soon.

If its galvanised, it is more resistant to corrosion as of the zinc but personally i would treat it (even if its just some good chassis paint rather than waxoil) to prevent any corrosion at all. Personally, I think having a black chassis looks better than a silver one (it does stand out that galvanising) Also, if you are off road etc, and something scrapes your chassis etc, it could remove the zinc off one part of the galvanising and cause that area to corrode. Also, as its getting winter time and they grit the roads, the more protection the better as the salt and steel dont tend to get on too well. Hope that helps.

Also Richards will stamp your vin number in the chassis if you send them copy of registration/v5
