TBH, I think speakers in the dash work really well - you don't have to turn the volume up too far, as they are pointing at your ears. It does make wiring very easy too.

Thanks very much.
Think I'm getting a bit caught up in 'quality'.
I would have preferred to have speakers in the dash that I could upgrade, but as I said not keen on cutting it about myself, so will have a look at those.

The tweets int he dash would be easy enough, as you can get surface mount ones which you just attach to the A pillar trim. The mids would be the things which require cutting. can't think of a way around it unless you can find lo
I am beginning to think this is a good idea and am looking into getting someone to install some for me. Hopefully it won't cost too much!!

If you go down this route, see if you can pick up a cheap 2nd hand alpine v12 amp, and a decent head unit with pre-outs.

Ah well that's a whoooole new can of worms!

don't be put off by it.... it's a lot less of a job than in a normal car. google the crap out of it, you'll see how little there is to it. I think it was even covered in the one of the mags a couple of months ago when they did an article on retrimming your own dash

I think that's one job I certainly won't be attempting!

well, one thing at a time I suppose, but believe me - I started off knowing nothing about anything in terms of mechanics, and then a few years on, I'm building a defender from scratch. It's the easiest form of anything automotive basically. You take normal modern car and try and do half of these jobs yourself and it's a nightmare, but a defender is just giant mechano. All the info / vids are already on the internet and it just take time, patience, and methodical approach. I'm very nervous about doing car jobs I;ve never done before, but I now know that working with a landy is the most forgiving it ever gets

Fully agree. Service on my 90 takes me a few hours, service on my girlfriends Hyundai i20 takes most of the day.

Stripping the Defender dash is easy as anything, Ive taken mine off so many times its second nature. Just remember where all the screws go back in!

Infinity do a set of speakers that would normally fit into the holes in the lower dash and come with external tweeters which can be mounted up higher. The left side of the lower dash is easy to remove so the cutting work can be done safely outside the landy. The right side is a little harder as you would have to cut in situ but still not that tough to do.
