Defender Front Springs and Shocks

I’m in the middle of renewing these. Done them before, a while ago, and there’s no retainers on the bottom of the springs. They are sat straight onto the seats. Is this normal ?? It’s an 89.

IIRC non on the front, but retainers on the back. Sorry, too late and dark to go out and confirm
