Got myself a 10" slate laptop (HP TC1100) for digi mapping in the rover :)

Its going to run memory map, mapsource and fugawi. holding all the 1:25k OS maps along with maps for France and North Africa. I wont be travelling without it!

So now it has come time to mount it  simplest option i have explored so far is to run 2 velcro straps across the upper and lower section of the dash. I have a mudstuff console so that takes up a fair amount of space.

my idea was to run a short length of webbing tight horizontally across the upper and lower dash sections. then fasten the vertical velcro straps behind the webbing and around the laptop.

The lower dash seems up to the job as its metal and you can get behind it to bolt it in. The problem comes with the upper dash which appears soft. whats it made of? is there anything solid behind it to screw into? Im not sure how im going to fasten anything to the upper "soft" dash.

any thoughts or pictures of stripped upper dash sections?

I did think about mounting it elsewhere (seatbox, cubby box etc) but feel that it intrudes into the passenger space quite a bit. As its a slate (just screen, no keyboard) its out of the way flat against the dash. Not sure how well im going to be able to see it, but i should be able to angle it in for better viewing once a secure mount has been sourced. Thinking of using a combi of velcro straps for now. This way also allows me to remove the laptop without leaving any hardware in the way.

If all this fails I will be looking at a few Ram bits and a cradle of my own.

Can you remember them old school CD walkman car kits ?? hat that flexable arm on them and a platform to mount you walkman on ?? goodmans made them .

Something like that would be ideal , just mount it vertical :) .

to heavy :( its still only 1.2kg though, which is pretty good for a laptop/slate. it measures around 27x21x2cm.

Now thinking of running 2 velcro straps around the dash (through the heater vent and under the plastic trim) using buckles on these to hold the velcro straps holding that go vertically around the slate with bolted webbing on the lower dash... Yer, its hard to imagine i know! Will go to B&Q after xmas and source the bits, post pics when im done.

any pictures of upper dashboards in pieces or exploded diagrams would be very helpfull. ta.

I think I understand what your at, will it fit between the steering column and raido (muddash) at 27cm I'd say its tight but if fits there I think it would look good. Otherwise I'd mount it overhead somehow with a hinge to fold it up when not in use.
I had the dash apart during the summer when I replaced the windscreen washer jet I never took any photos though sorry

otherside of the mudstuff Jim. Not enough room to fit anything on the drivers side. It will be right infront of the passenger and only protrude 2cm from the line of the dash. however I understand I wont be able to see this very well so was going to space one side to angle it out a little to give a better view.

I really like the idea of an overhead, i thought about it for my PDA using the rear view mirror bracket as a mount. However for something the size of a 10" screen i think it will prove too large. Weight would be an issue also as the mount would be inverted (pinting down) therefore it would have to be hella secure :)

It would take a little planing and a fair bit work plus a new headlinings not cheap if you make a balls of it, it is possible though, Cartman :D
Happy Christmass by the way
