Just a general question about clutches.

Is it best to preventively maintain these by replacing them every 50,000 miles or so or just waiting for them to fail?

What I mean is that are they a nightmare job to change?
How many parts make them up?
Is it a two man job?

ps i can do it on me tod in a series, easier with help o course but i managed on me tod,,,,,,measure between the roof sides ,cut yersel a bit of good 3x2,cut angles on to match the roof line ,put ower the doors, loop of rope round it not tight mine, put your hoist in the loop ,lift box, turn box across chassis rails, lower, move hoist to the end lift box and lower it out the door,,,simples,,,,,dave howzat mate

On a Defender its a gearbox out job, which I dont think is quite as easy as on the Series vehicles. Its labour intensive as far as your mechanics invoice is concerned.

The clutch fork is a common problem where it either breaks or pierces the surface of the component it pushes against. If ever you have a clutch change, I would advise replacing the synchro mesh on the gearbox also. Its a cheap part that is otherwise made expensive by having to remove the box again at a later date.

My clutch fork went at about 70K miles.

If you're taking your engine or gearbox out for some other reason then put a new clutch in at the same time. Otherwise leave it till you need one.

Seems about 50,000 too early to me - if driven properly a LR clutch will last very well - the fork is an issue yes but again it comes down to driving style, sitting on the clutch a lot will obviously lead to premature failure, revving away before you take off etc...

Thanks for this advice guys. My Landrover is on about 90,000 miles and I have a feeling at the very least the clutch cable ought to be changed.

Is that also an engine/gearbox out job?

a good indicater of clutch wear is the biting point.near floor clutch good near top clutch worn. having said that mine was near top when i bought it and could make it slip setting off on steep hills, but still got 90 000 miles before i needed to replace it. as someone said its how you drive em
