What is the level of alteration needed to fit a Defender Bulkhead into my 1990 Land Rover 90 TD? Does this vary much dependent on the year of the defender that the bulkhead comes from?

I've seen people saying it's not a massively hard job, but it's definitely not something I'd want to attempt. Would the changes to the bulkhead be something most Defender specialists know how to do, or is it usually a case by case basis dependent on the donor car and the base car etc?

Any answers appreciated.

IIRC they are a straight swap, although a bit of jiggling might be needed to the drivers side footwell for the pedals.
Simple enough job though.

They are almost exactly the same.

The only major differences are between engine/gearbox tunnel configurations, but they all can be made to fit each other with a little bit of fettling.

You could bolt a even bolt a 2016 puma bulkhead into a 1983 110 or 90 if you really wanted to.

My 85 has a td5 bulkhead that I fitted, there are quite a few alterations required, what bulkhead are you thinking about fitting? It is important that you state this as they are different as the years go on, usually dictated by engine type.
Not an immense job, but not a straight swap by any means unless you get a bulkhead from the same engine type that you already have.

Might be worth mentioning that mine has a disco 300tdi conversion?

Thanks for the reply. That's what I'm trying to gauge, which year etc would be best swap for my 90 TD with 300tdi conversion. I'm guessing any bulkhead from a defender 300tdi would be the most obvious choice. They just seem quite hard to come by unless they're ridiculously priced or damaged.

I think all the older ones are hard to come by now. Might be easier to bite the bullet, and have one made. It would fit your vehicle without further alteration.

Td5 will fit with a few alterations, nothing serious, anything later than that I don't know but I think you will be looking at a lot of stuff to sort, probably won't be too difficult, wipers, heater, dash mounts, fuse box, perhaps steering, gearbox, floors, pedals, basically anything that mounts on the bulkhead will most likely need attention, it could be only a few rivnuts or a bit of cutting or adding brackets.

what gearbox have you got , this will tell us what tunnel and floors you have.

up to puma defenders all the bulkheads have the same tunnel fixings, though puma can be altered, td55 was a common bulkhead to use awhile back for earlier trucks as the were relatively cheap compared to others

The diaphragm is different on a TD5 and the bulkhead needs trimmed to take the Lt77 then you can use your tunnel and floors, the thing is finding one, if it was me i would have a crack at making a puma fit, it shouldn't be too difficult , there is a company on the net selling galvy bulkheads but they sent cheap. 175 quid new LR were selling their TD5 bulkheads for. Wish now I bought a few dozen of them.
