Defender 90 Judder

They wus replaced. To be fair Ody....I took the front prop off and it's still in the back of the truck. It wasn't the correct one to start with and I thought it was the problem one as the rubber boot had come away from the sliding joint, there was zero lubrication and the splines were showing rust!! :eek:

It's running well and after paying for replacements...or even 4 new quality UJ's, plus the hassle and time refurbing and fitting em cos I've not previously done a lot of spanner work...I'm happy! :D
 
Ideal! I just replaced mine, did the whole shebang and glad i did as i only realised about the splines being as worn as they were after it came off, it drives like a new car now - 60 felt like take-off speed before, now even 80 has been seen! Makes helluva difference, even with only the tiniest bit of movement in the shafts!

Glad it's sorted, there's something reassuring about replacing important bits!
 
To be fair tis much happier sub 70, and way less thirsty, but it'll do it. I also tackled the steering set up so that's pretty tight at the mo (although now some bush has gone somewhere) so it was a fairly safe experiment on a straight empty road in good weather, but it felt pretty sure (for a nearly 20 year old banger!)

Glad you got this sorted. I have just got exactly the same problem with my 2001 Defender 90 TD5. Just checked the props (I am not a mechanic) and notived that I can turn the front prop at least a third of an inch.
Should this happen or is the prop or UJs worn?

It’s normal to be able to turn the prop a little, our TD5 90 is the same, and it drives fine.

You are basically taking up slack in the transmission when you turn the prop by hand.
 
ok thanks, i was hoping it would be the problem. Not sure how to check the UJs so will take it to my local indy garage tomorrow as it is advertised on autotrader and ebay at the moment and it needs to be 100%
