Hi Guys. New to the forum. Im going to see a 1996 TD 90, 2.5 on Monday. The link if u want to see some pics is LAND-ROVER Defender 90 2.5 Td en Las Palmas - Segundamano.es

95.000 km, 5000 euros. I do actually live in spain.:)

Please can u give me a guide as to the main things I should look out for (and as im a total ignorant when it comes to cars....so please be really explicit....as if you´re explaining it to a 4 year old).

It is a pressie for my missus who just loves the defender but I dont want to buy her a dud.

Thanks in advance.

Simon.

looks nice in the photees, Check the chassis! rear x member, one along the back under the rear door. check those great big mud scoops they like rotting there.
bulkhead out riggers, ones underneath the front door pillars behind the front wheels. put your hand inside, check no ass has bodged it with some bit of ali glued to the inside the underbodysealed over top! check its not loads of loose crud in there also.
Check the footwell underneath, there is a gap above B-head outrigger, you should be able to feel if you got a problem there.
Also the center x member, this one is awkward, check all those voids on top, so as you dont get what pictured:mad:
So long as chassis is ok rest is easy:suspicious:
But if its lived in spain all its life, probably not be that bad, not spent its whole life wading through cow ****e its whole life:bounce:
I am sure my case is worst case senario

FYI it should not have a 2.5TD in it if its from 1996 as this was swaped to the 200tdi in 1990. The 200TDI is a turbo diesel, and is 2.5L so they may have got confused. The earlier engine to the 200tdi was called the 2.5TD (or the 19J to give it, it real name), and many 2.5TD were swaped converted to 200tdi.

Make sure they have not converted it back the other way - have no idea why anybody would . The easy way to tell (apart from the obvious lack of power) is that the 200tdi has an intercooler and hance has a second bit of bright alluminum running along the top of the engine just off to the side of the rocker cover (which will also be bright(ish) alluminum with a yellow oil filler) as opposed to the older 2.5TD which just had a turbo sitting ontop of the manifold and no intercooler.

If in doubt send us a photo of the engine bay

OK, OK, OK thanks for the clarification of that minor point

:director:

Actualy the 19j was 2495cc i think you will find which is actualy 5c less than 2.5L if you really want to be exact
