Yeah I did the screwdriver trick a number if times on my last one as the solenoid was buggered (it did eventually go completely) but you could still hear it spinning, it just wouldn't engage the flywheel. It's not the starter as its shown no symptoms whatsoever.
I'm gonna clean off the earth's and whatnot tonight and see if that'll sort the lights at least. Hopefully that'll fix the starting problem too.

that's assumption. do the screwdriver trick and see if it works, then you can forget about the starter

It's not assumption. If the solenoid isn't engaging the starter with the flywheel it still makes a sound. The only way it wouldn't make a sound would be if the starter was well and truly gubbed, which it isn't cost it started.

nope. the solenoid does two things, it kicks the bendex out to engage the flywheel and also connects the solenoid pos to the motor pos.

if the solenoid has an intermittent fault, gunked up, weak then sometimes it would have the power engage else it wouldn't do a thing.

with no multi, easy test is as above. else you use a multi to test the spade and also the two studs.

My money's on the earth's but I'll have a look and see. When the solenoid on my last one was playing up it would just whirr or click very loudly and that was about it. It wouldn't engage with the flywheel but was still getting power. I have absolutely nothing here, I turn the key and nothing. No click, no whirr, no turn over, no relay sounds. Nothing. That's why I'm thinking a loose, dirty or corroded earth strap. Would explain the sudden problem with the lights too

not engaging would probably be a washer type thing on the bendex shaft that the lever pushes against. they wear and just fall off, so it won't engage with the flywheel.

yeah i think earth or bad connection with the spade is probably the way to go. gl!

You did plug it into the wall and switch it on first didnt you? It often helps with electrical what nots

Don't worry about the landy. Just look at the puppy on your avatar, and think of all the love you are being sent from bejing. Someone might give you a lift to LZ11

Took the gearbox earth off as best I could and cleaned it up a little and copper greased it before putting it back on tightly. Had a few other jobs to do and it was ####ing freezing so didn't get round to the other earth but I'll see what it's like in the morning
