Hi there,

i've got a bit of a leak from the rear diff on my 1997 Defender 110 300tdi and would like the replace the seal. is this a straightforward DIY job on the drive or more of a specialist job.
Also do people normally just change the seal or change the flange as well? i've seen this kit from paddock - https://www.paddockspares.com/stc4858-flange-kit.html which includes the seal as well and seems like a reasonable price, or there is the seal only , e.g. https://www.jgs4x4.co.uk/defender-discovery-differential-diff-double-lip-oil-seal/ which is a lot cheaper.

any thoughts and advice gratefully received.

cheers

Steve

Those Paddocks and JGS4x4 are selling are both Britpart ... don't touch them.

As said you need a Corteco seal ...

There is likely not a problem with the Drive Flange (being Britpart).
It is pretty easy to do yourself. The rear flange nut is tight and needs a hefty 129NM so you'll need a good tight fitting socket and a long bar to get it off in the first place.
Make sure the wheels are chocked well (front and back).

Let us know how you get on.
