Is there a fix yet for this fault? I found a couple of long discussion threads about it on other forums, but no definite resolution.

My friend recently bought a 2013 110 XS 2.2tdci from the LR main dealer.

The Defender kangaroos when trying to drive in first and second gear, in traffic for instance. The engine seems to hold on to RPM when you take your foot off the gas, then there's a delay when you press the pedal again.

They took it back to the dealer but were told to "live with it as that is how they are"

The lady won't drive it and they are on the verge of rejecting it. I read that BAS had fixed this with their remap, but nobody seems to have actually had it done.....everybody is talking about the earlier 2.4.

Can anybody tell me if there is a fix for this yet?

Disgraceful behaviour by the dealer. They can't all be like that surely? I would ring a couple more dealers and independents to get their opinion.

I don't know.

But what l want to find out, is whether there is a solution to the driving issue with the 2.2tdci.

Looking online it's clearly a known fault with some examples of this model.

There's no point in going back to LR if they can't fix it. Some people seem to drive around the issue while others have gone on the forums to try and find a solution.

Some are claiming that aftermarket companies have a remap that makes it a lot better to drive.

It's just frustrating that they have sold something, it's not fit for purpose, they don't give a damn. They've taken her cash and are now fobbing her off. If there is a fix surely they should acknowledge and/or pay for it.

Mine does not kangeroo, so they all don't do that. It takes a fraction of a second for the revs to drop when changing cog which I put down to flywheel effect; the fix is to make "slow" gear changes and hesitate for that fraction of a second in between gears. It ain't a problem and suits my driving style, is that not the same as all defenders?

I believe this characteristic was brought in with the td5, although it was multiplied with the tdci engine. They hold onto their revs slightly to make gear change uptake smoother, if you're not used to it then it can seem a bit odd. Personally, I don't like the effect.

The 2.2 hangs on to revs when changing gear to smooth the gear change, make it more car like. My 2.2 kangarood in 2nd gear, then I had a BAS remap. which I cant recommend highly enough. No more Kangarooing, 171bhp on the rolling road and 365ft/lb torque. I believe LR have a fix in the engine management system for the kangarooing which the dealer should be able to install.

Do you have any more information about the LR fix, as in reference number etc as their dealer says there's nothing can be done.

I believe there was an upgrade to the engine management system in 2013 which eases the problem, but for a cure you will need a remap. LR dealer should reprogramme for free. Is your Defender part of the oil pump recall? Ask them to check the programme. The kangarooing is not acceptable, it's downright dangerous.
