Defender 110 rear brake squeal

The rear disk brakes on my 110 are squealing really loudly when they have done a few miles each day. I checked both sets of pads and also smeared some coppaslip on the back of the pads, which has helped, but not cured the noise.

One of the "anti squeal" shims is missing on the one pad, I've done a search, and can't find any for sale, unless you buy them with a set of genuine pads for £50 +

Are they available separately from anywhere? Before I take the plunge on the full kit. My pads are only half worn.

Have you tried chamfering off the leading edge of the pads?

No I haven't tried that yet, I'm tempted to try new pads, and the shims, and if that does not help, I'll try shaving the pads.

Er,

t'other way round is betterer..

.. I know they aren't expensive, but, its easy enough to take the edge off.

Hmm I see your point, ok I'll tweek the pads first. Never had a peep out of the brakes on my 90, but the 110 is like a banshee, people even turn and glare at me, whilst covering their children's ears. Ok the last bit I made up, but it's quite bad.......

Fitted new pads, and copious amounts of coppaslip, and they still squeal like a piggy. I'm hoping they will bed in but not holding my breath. It's making me grumpy now.

Took new pads out, got hailed on, chamfered edged and cleaned up the copaslip, got hailed on, put them back in, got rained on and then went out for a test drive.......just as bad, so it looks like I'll be buying new gen pads, as I just can't cope any more......

Would new calipers be worth a try? It could be the way the pads are sitting in the calipers, or even a sticky piston?

If it's annoying you that much, perhaps new discs, pads and calipers would sort it. I wouldn't have thought it's necessary to go for genuine pads myself.

Ok. So I am £66.37 lighter in the wallet

but, not even a whisper out of the back brakes, and they are stopping better.

So to be fair it was worth the hit.

So must make a mental note to replace with gen pads if I ever wear these out. Either that or make sure I try AP Lockheed (as that's what it says on the back of the pads)

Great news well done. What brand pads were removed?

No idea on the original part worn pads, I left them in after fitting new disks, which I thought was the issue, so I fitted Motaquip pads as I have a trade account, which squealed worse. Now original fitted with the full new fitting kit, and a smear of coppaslip.
