Defender 110 - at a price for a 17 year old does that exist?

Hello all
I've not long passed my driving test and have been drawn to a good old Defender sicen I can get insured on it cheaper with NFU than I could a Corsa or Fiesta.
I've learned to drive on a Fiat Panda, but have a small amount of experience on my Dad's Disco - although I realise it'll be nothing like driving a Defender.
Although the insurance on a 110 is cheap, I can't seem to find a Defender within my budget at all. All my local traders are selling them (albeit newer models) from £8K upwards.
I was hoping that I'd be able to find one for around £2,000 although at that price I realise it would need to be an older model.
Would I be able to find a 110 in good condition for that price realistically?

You should be able to find one. It won't be pretty, but you should get one with at least a few months MoT. Try browsing through the LRO and LRM magazines as they have decent classifieds in the back. Other than that, you can find some bargains on eBay provided you know what you're doing. :welcome2: by the way :)
 
I got my first Defender when I was 23 from eBay (and the second one actually) both for under £2k. I'd give that a shot.
Have a look, and if you're not sure then stick the link on here and I'm sure someone will be able to let you know if its worth going to see or not.

Let us know roughly where you are in the country and you might even find that someone close by will be able to lend a hand when you get one. They might foul mouthed and inbred some of em, but they're happy to come rescue you from a ditch too!

Its a steep learning curve maintenance wise, so make sure you have some good spanners and some WD40!!

im in pretty much the same boat, im 17, taking my driving test soon, but i want a 90 not a 110, can i ask whats the best quote you have had? the best ive got is £2700 from co-op :/
 
Bloody hell, 2700 for insurance is that?

I would wait a year or so and then get one. You might save a grand or so which you can put towards it.

Dont go balls out to buy one, they will need maintenance, parts, tax, time, fuel (£1.25/L) MOT (probably welding etc)

Make sure you do have the funds to run it, or you will just be pi$$ed off when u have to look at it when you cant drive it.

I dont know what the older ones are like on fuel, my TD5 is currently doing 36Mpg Average and im putting £90 a week in it. I do have a longish communte, but if i had a different car, i might only be putting £50/weeek in.

Just work out if u can realistically afford £2700 for insurance, cause you will have to pay for it again the next year. Work out how many miles u will do, maintenance costs etc then when you can afford one, get one.

Dont want u to be put off the experience of having a landy, if u cantr afford to run it.

I love my Landy, They are brilliant.
 
I am 16 and have had the exact same idea as you. I just bought a 1993 90 with 12 months tax and mot for £2500. There is NOTHING wrong with it at all. Ignore dealers, they just want to rip you off. It's just a case of going on eBay and placing bids until you win one at a price you want. I got lucky because it went no where near the reserve but the guy had to move house and needed the money so he said he would take £2500. I'm in the process of fitting a lift kit and accessories. Luckily my uncle is a mechanic who did half of his apprenticeship at LR and my grandad has 50 years of engineering experience and loves cars and has a garage for me to work in. Good luck!

My quote for my 90 is £1500 from NFU. The only condition is that a parent joins them as well and it has no more than 3 seats (the front three).

It's doubtful that you'd find a "good condition" 110 for 2 grand easily but that's not to say that they don't exist. Full marks to you for setting your sites on one of the best vehicles in the world! if I were you , I would get a 1 litre Polo for now (good re-sale value) or similar and spend some time looking for the right Landy. Join as many web-sites as you can and advertise what you're looking for. Be aware though, that on a limited budget, you're likely to spend more time underneath than in the driving seat, so if that's really what you want - go for it!
 
Hey, im 19 and going to be taking my driving test soon. I got myself a 86 110 last year for £1020 quid, came with a roof rack and some lights so was a pretty good buy and the van its self was in a ok condition. However since we have had it we have done a fair bit of work on it, probs spent just shy of a grand on it in spares and repair work to date, but by the time i finish it should be great.

I have been looking at insurance aswell, tried NFU and they wouldnt insure me even if my dad went with them beacause of my age, and they dont insure Ex MoD landys. Going to try Adrian Flux, they seem like my best bet to get a decent price on my insurance, they do offroading cover,Ex Mod, Landrover Mods ect ect so try checking them out see if you get a cheaper price :)
 
hello, i am 18, living in devon.. i have a 1992 defender 90 200tdi which i bougght for £1500.. i have done about 2months work to it from the ground up to get it looking smart and do modifications such as . tree sliders light bar snorkel alloy wheels steering guard and other extras when ii can affor dto . if you are getting a defender keep in mind you will need to work on it and do regular maintainence i.e. greaseing propshafts. i love working on my landy so this isnt a problem. if you dont want to do this then dont think about getting one because it will fall apart in your hands. they are great if you dont mind working on them and putting money towards it. my insurance is doe on my own policy 3rd party fire and theft with the post office as it was cheaper than the NFU. i have also declared all my modifications including my sound system and it is still cheaper so it is worth looking around. cheers
