Hi all. After some advice as to what to buy next. I start a new job in a few weeks and need a new motor. The job is quite a distance so I'll be driving about 300 miles north on a Sunday night and the same south on a Friday. I am about to get married and have a baby on the way. My options so far are either a discovery 3 hse, preferred choice if I'm honest. A freelander 2 hse or a mid range Volvo XC90 it may seem odd asking about a Volvo on an LR forum but I'm hoping you good folk will offer some guidance. I have between 10 and 12 k to spend and would like to keep running costs to a reasonable amount. Any advice would be great fully received. Thanks. Sid

D3's aren't known for their economy, 600 miles per week will be around 20 Gallons (90 litres) of fuel, at todays prices that is about £100. Unless you have a particular requirement for a D3 or need to scratch that itch it may be worth looking for something a bit more economical?

Move closer to where you work? ;)

I think you should be able to make your own mind up. No need to ask others.

Factual info is available for all the vehicles. However anything subjective needs to come from you, as subjective views of others are just their opinion.

My 'opinion' is. 600 miles a week!!!! is a lot of miles. No idea what your job is, but assuming you have normal levels of annual leave. That means potentially 46 weeks commuting a year.

600 x 46 = 27,600 miles a year.

Are you paying for the fuel and maintenance on the vehicle? If not, that is a heck of a lot of miles to fund yourself.

Lets say circa 28mpg overall.

That's 986 gallons of fuel a year, just for commuting.

Or £4930 a year on commuting fuel.

And not forgetting your £515 road tax per year!:mad:

Personally I would also prefer a d3 over the others, however I drive D4's occasionally and according to on board computer I can get 8mpg out of it at times, and as much as 25mpg going downhill though I would be towing 3.5t.

I actually like the volvo's shape and volvo's in general, my dirty secret.

I reckon it's a toss up between FL2 and xc90, road tax and insurance will be nothing compare to fuel.
I use to do loads of miles, a 4x4 wasn't the answer, it was an Audi A3

Genuine photo, Audi A3 2.0tdi sport 54 plate, I got 60+ on a regular basis, this was a PB
