I'm sure I knew this once upon a time, but cannot now remember. Why do the numbers only go from 03 to 08? Is this because the part only fits from 03 to 08? Thanks in advance.

Don't know but usually they are production info so they can trace and recall a run of parts if something goes wrong.
Could be model year and month of production, or machine/assembly-line and month. Dunno.

On the air dryer on the P38 it has the same. It is the year and month of manufacture
I get that it's month and year. What I'm trying to work out is, is it the year numbers because it fits those year models? Otherwise why not do 12 years as well as 12 months? Or is it restricted to model/Mk eg: 3 yrs for the mk1 L322, 4yrs for mk2 etc, etc, etc?

In this case it the year and then the month. 👍
01/2008
Production run years they are.
Yep. Got all that. BUT. Is it 03 to 08 on the years because that part fits those models, made in that time period despite minor changes elsewhere on that designation. If not why limit it to those numbers? They can put 12 months why not 12 years? The part shown is from a 2008 vehicle, the L322 had a change during 2003 -2008, so why not show from the change date?

That's a very good question my dear.
I can only go from my own experience kiddo. As you know the amount of revisions made to some models is beyond sense or belief.
I'm glad the P38 is a little more simple and straight forward tbh😵‍💫

It's not a part number, just the month and year that part was made. It does not provide any guarantee as to what the part will fit.
