Up **** creek.
I went to start the landy today and instead of turning over she just went "clunk".

I tried this a few times and every time the same thing happens, I tried rocking her in gear but still the same.

Then I noticed a small amount of smoke coming from the starter, I got a mate to turn they key for me when I was under there and the clunk is coming from the starter, so is the tiny amount of smoke and it's hot/quite warm to the touch.

She has been fine up until now, perhaps very occasionally hesitating for half a second before turning the starter.

Is it much of a job to replace and is there anything I should be aware of? Do I need any special tools?

Before I go ordering a replacement I just wondered if you lot think it sounds like the problem or could it be anything else?

Cheers.

Easy to get to ish, you need to remove the turbo pipework and then it's just three bolts and a few connectors, once it's off its worth spinning it up with some jump leads direct to the battery to see what's going on,could be seized or just gunned up. They aren't complicated things and a strip down clean and lube can work wonders.

i removed mine without removing pipework - one push tag, one earth strap, power and three bolts. - 30 mins. 300TDi.

use a ratchet ring spanner - or 3

Possibly a 'silly' suggestion, but check the battery and engine earths first - battery and starter can be just fine, but a poor earth can cause a huge voltage drop which increases the current the starter is drawing, which overheats the solenoid contacts and makes them smoke...

Well things have taken a little turn for the worst, I went to bump her today and the first two times she refused and then the third time whilst going a bit quicker down the hill she bumped and started but when I turned her off and went to restart her she now will just turn over but not start, I'm getting spark and you can smell unburnt fuel from the exhaust, I even tried turning her over whilst spraying easy start into the air intake but still no joy, I can still bump her but there is now a loudish clicking noise coming from the OS bank of the V.

I'm going to see my mechanic mate tomorrow so I will see what he says.

Head gasket? Dont underestimate how easy hotwire injection v8s are to flood mind. Is all your ign components up to scratch? Genuine not crap aftermarket? Cold weather and rain means condensation under dizzy cap no spark then flooding then tears. Try putting your foot flat to the boards and starting her to see if she catches.
I would not run a 3.9 without quality ign components every year or two, been there seen the AA man rescue me and then wife ordered v8 gone....
Another thing, when you changed the starter did you disconnect battery? Easy to short stuff out and blow a fuse? Check fuses too.

Sorry for the late reply there's been a lot going on for me recently (another story for another day) but basically something in the engine had seized! She bumped, something went crunch and now theres a terrible noise coming from about where cylinder number 8 is and the oil light is permenantly on! I can start her with the key now but she's really not happy.

There was no warning whatsoever, oil is fine and is over serviced, water is fine, no overheating, very confusing?

Had 2 mechanic mates look and both said she was terminal so new engine! So the choice was a like for like replacement lump supplied and fitted £500, a RR 4.6 RPI he wanted silly money for or a 3.9 lump just taken from an overfinch which has just had the heads done for £750 fitted so I've gone for the overfinch.
