Okay as they say stupid is as stupid does, so I'm going for the prize of stupidest question this year. I have heard people on the forum talking about de cating and de egr valving their Disco's. Can anyone tell me the benifits of doing this? I know what both of these parts do and may possibly do this with my 03 Td5. My Disco runs perfectly and gives me no trouble and I'm worried about possibly upsetting the engine and running into a world off trouble. The only complaint I would have is it's a little on the thirsty side ( about 20 mpg ) I just put this down to being automatic. So has anyone any thoughts on de cating and de egr valving a Disco?
 
de-cat lets the turbo spool up quicker by reducing back pressure
egr valve recurculates gasses to help with emissions iirc and removing it improves mpg

Hi Dee, just to give you an idea, my TD auto 2002 gives me on average 29mpg. It is de-egr'd, de visco fan'd and right now is being de-catted (except it's raining right now :D). I also run a K&N filter and she is regularly serviced.

The mpg with autos seems to vary more than with manual box versions, but even so 20mpg sounds horrendous to me. On that basis you might as well run a V8 and have all the power and growl.

I found that when I did these mods on all my previous TDi's it would improve mpg by 3-4.

last month i de egr, fitted a ITG filter in my disco 2 2004 es auto and it really really made a vast difference:):):)

next on the job list is a remap:D:D:D
 
Hi Dee, just finished the de-catt modification and she now runs much better.

Smoother and more nippy, better up hills and I would expect better mpg as I'm backing off more. :D:D:)

Hmmm, 20mpg sounds all too familiar to me! - I was getting 18-20mpg and then i realised that my Fuel Pressure Regulator was leaking!

I would have a look at this, mine is a TD5 03, Manual. I personally think its been like that since i bought the vehicle last year, i jumped in last night and noticed one hell of a difference - Much more responsive and pulled all the way through rather than having a hurrendous turbo lag which it had before!

Worth having a look?

This sounds familiar to me! Best I have a look. Incidentaly, my mpg went down after removing the EGR. I noticed the increase in power with the result that I was for ever using kickdown - not good for mpg but it feels terrific!
 
Hmm, Arent the EGR Replacements supposed to make the fuel economy better?

My Fuel Pressure regulator was dripping onto the bellhousing and i could see it dripping from the bottom of here. Noticed it months ago but thought it was oil from a possible crankshaft seal, however this is not the case. Changed the FPR and jobs a good un, no more dripping and a certain increase in power. And increased MPG! Cant complain at that :)

If that is representative of your driving style, 20 mpg is all you'll get :D:D

May I suggest you considor this:

1. Discovery TD5 - 136bhp, 2250kgs = 60.44 bhp per ton;

2. Average family car Ford Mondeo - 130bhp (2ltr diesel), 1150kgs = 89.65bhp per ton;

So on power to weight ratios alone, the Discovery is very much underpowered by comparison to an average family saloon.

The you take into account permanent 4 wheel drive and the frictional losses inherent in that and the figures become even less attractive for the Discovery.

All the above means that if drive a Discovery to give average family car levels of performance, it WILL supp the diesel.

They have many, many strengths but performance by comparison to a modern day car is not one of them.

Can a de CAT'd and de EGR'd vehicle be used only on private land? ie, will it fail its MOT without the CAT and EGR?
 
No it won't..

I asked my local garage regarding fitting a de-cat pipe before discovering (pun intended) my Disco already had one. They said as long as it's a proper replacement and not a botch job i.e. just me under the Landy with an angle grinder and a welder then no problems - it's as if the vehicle never had a CAT :)

Emissions from the TD5 are very good - not heard of any trouble regarding de-EGR. However, in the latest LRO magazine (Sept. issue) someone raised the question regarding de-EGR and the tech guy said leave it because the ECU is programmed to accept it... :fencing: :eek: :confused: :confused:

My Disco runs fine and sounds great. :p

I have egr removed, de-cat and straight through pipe it feels as if it has a bit more power and it sounds nice hearing the exhaust instead of the engine but it's a 300tdi not a td5 but I would imagine results would be similar.

Don't really notice improved mpg as being able to rev a bit higher etc has had the adverse affect of making my foot a bit heavier.

I read the same article so only ordered a de cat pipe which will be fitted soon. Didn't get the EGR blanking kit as I am also very confused as it may affect the ecu running the engine.

My 2004 D2 td5 went for the French Controle technique yesterday, the equivalent of the UK MOT. On the emissions test it is allowed a level of 3.00 and it was showing 0.50 (don't know if this is a % something or other measure) so it passed with flying colours, hence de cat will be fine, I feel.

The bloke who did the test was very impressed with the low level.

No it won't fail as a result of these two modifications. The real important element is the smoke test so if your TD5 is running clean with a new air filter as a precaution, then you'll be fine.

TD5's were designed to run as a clean engine, so if it's running correctly, there will be no problem.

Could we not mention this to the Road Tax thieving department of government?

Nope. The tax is based on a standard vehicle, they simply won't listen.

Thanks for the replies chaps...

I don't have a Landy as yet but one I have my eye on has already EGR and CAT removed. Was just a little concerned if either had been removed due to a fault and then it rendered the vehicle un-MOT'able. Seems your answers have dulled my concerns.
