I watched the Central news today and they were on about diesel owners who take out the filter in the exhaust I presume they mean the cat . it is illegal ant they are testing Garages to see if they will take the cat off and put a through pipe on. if they do it and then that garage will loose the MOT licence. I did not think it was illegal on older cars but this says it is and you car will fail the MOT .and as I understood even using a cleaner is illegal or I may be wrong on that one.

The presence of a Catalytic Converter and/or a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is indeed now a requirement for an MOT. So yes, if the vehicle has a clearly modified straight through pipe in place of a Cat/DPF it will fail.

However, if the existing Cat/DPF has signs of tampering, ie cut open and welded back up, this is not enough to warrant a fail. There is no proof the internals are missing, just that it has been opened. In this case it is a pass and advise.

hi I have re- watched the programme and it is the DPF they were on about from what I can gather is this fitted to new cars only?

I can confirm that the news item specifically referred to the DPF....no mention or reference to the Cat.

Short of X-raying the units, it's impossible to tell if the innards have been removed or "Modified" with a hammer and long chisel to give a "Straight through" operation. Obviously, cutting it open, doing a hysterectomy and welding it back up would stand out like a sore thumb and arouse the suspicions of any MOT tester worth his salt.;);)
