The front pipe on my 04 disco has been subject to a bad decay ( bodge doesn’t do it justice) do looking to replace with a straight pipe. Is it likely to cause me issues with the mot?

I’ve not had to get a disco mot’d for a while so not to clear on the rules

custom exhaust downpipe with a small vortex silencer will go on my td5 when the one fitted gives up. You could always put several turns of exhaust bandage round the new de-cat pipe where the cat would be;)
 
For what it's worth, back in 2012 I put a stainless steel exhaust on my TD5 Defender. It doesn't have a cat or any suggestive bulge on the downpipe and no one has ever said anything about it at the 9 MOT's I've been through since. And the tester isn't a friend either!
 
If it had a cat from the factory then by law it should have one fitted, I guess the caveat is like my TD5 D2 it didn't have one from new then it's ok.... ;)

My Daimler is the same.

for me 7 MOT's stainless de-cat exhaust (no bulge) and EGR bypass all good, did make sure it did not look too shiny for the first MOT, etc

i doubt if they even conciously look for it unless you have as ASBO sounding exhaust / gone a bit bright silicone pipes crazy under the bonnet, if it looks to be heavily modded they might look a little deeper, but as i said plain sailing this end!
 
Who knows, my hunch is that it will build up slowly. At some point they will link the vin codes to ID CAT vehicles then make a specific check and fail any that have mods. Industry will support it because they will sell a lot of hours and expensive cats. Could be popular with many voters too as it will be sold as reducing emissions for "legacy" vehicles during the run out to EV. If I had a de-cat vehicle I'd be on the look out for a used OEM system to put in the shed just in case so I don't have to pay premium if there is a problem.
 
Agreed, at some point it will come into public discussion and that will be that. Same with stuff like egr blanks etc

EGR blanks, simple leave in situ and place blanking sheet in line, remove butterfly inside EGR....
DECAT get a pipe with a bulge or use the genius idea of exhaust wrap above....
MOT testers cannot remove stuff to look inside, ever seen a lamborghini MOT being done?
does no take long, cos the underside is like a sheet of smooth metal, end to end, you cant see a single thing, and they dont brake machine test 4x4's so its lights and emissions and wipers and PASS...lol
 
Never forget that it is the Government that makes the laws. If they decide they are not getting what they want they will write laws until they do. The word missing from your (correct) analysis is "cannot remove stuff to look inside at the moment". That can be changed with a few taps on a keyboard in Westminster. The question that no one can answer is "how blatant does the abuse have to be to trigger a change in the law?" There's an interesting potential for a sting in the tail too: a modest penalty for those with modified exhausts and emissions, a much tougher penalty for those who have taken deliberate action to conceal the modifications. Gentlemen; place your bets.

mine is braked tested every time - either a tabley meter or a 4 wheel tester - depending on which of the 2 test centres I take it to

According to the law, if you have no proper roller brake tester you have to use a Tapley meter.
If your tester isn't doing that then he is breaking the law.

yeah i know, one place uses a tapley (no roller) and the other place uses a 4 wheel roller (but no tapley)
I prefer the 4 wheel roller as it does front back and side to side and gives a reading for each wheel and the handbrake. Identified a weak caliper front left last mot - although it was within spec it was starting to seize

Yer, I wish my place had a 4 wheel roller too, for exactly the reason you gave. But then they are dead reasonable and helpful so it's pick and choose time. I would like to think I could feel a caliper starting to seize. Deffo on the front but maybe not so easily on the rear.
