I haven't read this page...

https://www.mgfcar.de/sensor/

However, it has this pic, which I think implies there should be an oil temp sensor in that hole...

Probably only in some installations though.
Makes sense.

I have ordered a 'Plug - LYB100510L - Genuine LYB100510L' which is listed as the oil filter mount plug but doesn't say which of the holes it plugs.

At last!

Mr Dremel and I got busy and managed to get the old filter off.
Once I cut the center away from edge I was expecting either the edge to be welded to the mount or the center to be welded to the thread.
In fact the edge lifted off easily and the thread span off like it was new. There is some yellow cack around where the rubber seal sits that is either broken down rubber or, possibly, sealant.
I will wait and see whether part number LYB100510L is the correct plug to fill the hole in the new mount (hopefully tomorrow) or I'll swap the old mount back on. Fixing the new mount would be better as it is already in place and the hole to be plugged is easily accessed.

looks like sealant too me I used to use the yellow stuff to seal up rocker covers on citroen vans where they don't have a rubber gasket, complete and utter plum if they did

I am guessing you're using an oil filter mounting from a different incarnation of K-series with tappings for additional sensors? MGF uses additional tappings for the oil temperature and the oil pressure switch. TF160 has extra tappings to take the flexible oil hoses for the engine oil cooler.

Depending on the installation, the tappings are either BST (I think - I'll need to double check) or metric. You can probably guess how I found that out...

Just went by part number.... Brand new in box - what can go wrong?

For future reference that plug part number is for the first, smaller, hole.
I shan't dick around any more - I'll swap the parts back when I return from a week in the sun.

When I was googling around, I think I saw that the Oil Temp Sensor is the same as the Coolant Temp Sensor.

You could try taking the ECT off and see if it fits!

If it does they are cheap and readily available. It doesn't even need to work so one from a scrappy would do.

Now you have the oil sensor, I'd be tempted to fit an oil temperature gauge! Cheap from broken MGFs, or if you want a black gauge, these are available from the original manufacturer, VDO. :)

BUt then I'll get used to it and regret buying the world's cheapest temperature sensor!
