Right. For reference flare spanners seem to come in 9/11mm and 10/12mm. This one pipe requires 10 and 11mm, meaning that 15cm of pipe requires you to buy two spanners.:eek:
All sorted. New cylinders on, brakes rebuilt and drums on.
Fitted 4x wheels with Cooper Discoverer AT (barely worn) which I got from my local scrappy. Got wheels + tyres (x5) for less then the price of 2 tyres.
Lights all fixed too, so should be MOT-able soon :cool:
Other back brake to rebuild but will be a lot easier now with tools + knowledge.
Tailgate handle to sort + drivers internal door handle and then we'll see. Have her out of the garage and spin her round tomorrow. Can't wait!

I dont as a rule use grips. Mole grips being next to useless compared to the Irwins. but once you have a corroded rounded fastener/nut/ bolt head the vice grips can get you out of problem position.

Hi Lowbank - definitely agreed !. often you find the PO has beggered something up.. (rounded bleed nipples etc).
I still keep mole grips in the tool box - also a good old small and large Stilson !. often the best thing for alignment adjustment on the track rods etc :) .
And a big hammer of course. (well two for taper joints ...;)
Yup, quality tools first, but if in a pickle you the best alternative. (I have no idea what make my 'mole grips' are I use it as a generic name for vice grips. whatever they are they are excellent though.

Just ordered a Teng 10/11 flare nut spanner on Amazon Prime. Tomorrow I will be empowered.
I'll be glad to see the back of these drum brakes. What a PITA they are.
 
Added to the fact LR decided to spec fudge as a material to make some of the parts on our freelanders. I only need look at my fuel tank cradle and more bits drop off. I must replace it before the tank ends up on the floor.

I would never let mole grips anywhere near a pipe flare fitting !.:rolleyes::) - but to each their own....:eek:
lol, suppose I could have continued with the spanner, and ended up with a nice shiny round bleed nipple. I didn't particularly want that, so took something to it that shifted it with minimal damage. I considered it a bit of a result :)

Now that is something I'd never let anywhere near my motor again. I needed 2 tyres for my Discovery and the tyre shop offered me 2 part (barely) worns matching the other tyres - result. Well no, I checked them a little while after they went on and 1 had a 'slice' right across the tread of the tyre and the other had a 'bubble' poking out of the inside side wall. Both of them were death traps. So, for me now, 2nd hand tyres are to much of a risk.
 
They came off a car which was scrapped because the head gasket had gone. Which seems harsh!
Other than that it was almost immaculate.
But I shall proceed with caution.
 
We buy a second hand car with second hand tyres on it, don't we?
All those are potentially death traps too, but do we get them changed when there's still thousands of miles left in them? The answer is probably no;)
I can't see a problem with using wheel tyre combinations that came off a car. The condition of the wheels is a good indication as to how the car has been maintained. Also if the car has 5 identical tyres on the rims, then the owner is likely someone who looks after his car, including the tyres.

Must confess GG I agree with Nodge on this one. Whenever you buy a car that is not brand new you have no real idea what the state of the tyres are as far as these so called 'hidden defects'
The latest Panda is still new enough to have the original tyres on, however, we have a part worn tyre place down the road here and I can get two mint tyres for the panda for 30 euros fitted and balanced and tracked !! (for the PAIR!) and they are perfectly happy for me to inspect them inside prior to fitting. We used them on the last panda no worries. A hell of a lot here come from Germany. (We see the trucks coming in directly!).
Always use the same tyre place - bought all new for the freeby there so spend a fortune - got the wranglers and they were crap (it is a crap tread pattern on the 195 80 15
- not the normal wrangler) so then part exed them with the place for a set of Avon Ranger A/T's (waited 3 months for Coopers but couldnt get them!)

Buying a complete roadworthy car is a lot different to buying rubber from a breakers yard or the type of tyre shop that will onsell 2nd hand - who are going to be picking up the tyres from breakers.

Most dodgy parts from a breaker won't kill you, unlike tyres. Funny how all replacement engines from a breakers are "under 100K miles" and the same lies will apply to tyres - "yeh it was only scrapped because of a head gasket failure" - or was it that it skidded off the road and rolled down a hill?

When you buy a car you can generally tell if its been rolled down a hill or not.

If you can see the whole car at the breakers and you trust them, then fine, take a gamble to save a couple of quid - that is after all what you do when you buy anything from a breakers. I won't with tyres.

I've bought part worn loads of times over the years not from tyre dealers but from scrap yards as usually they tyres are still on the rims so as mentioned above you can inspect the rims for damage before they remove them n fit em to your car usually just for the price of a pint on top of the tyre cost
 
Prop, VCU (seems serviceable), diff, drive shafts, anything I could get off it cheap that looked decent.
Even the original radio and heater knobs.
Someone had already had the tailgate handle unfortunately.
