I
how do you rate the ebay ones compared to the nextbase 412?
Don’t know much, but the five I’ve owned, first was the mini 0902 @£52 it was 1080p so great picture, had a small screen and so small it was easy placed up behind the interior mirror, but ten months later the battery failed so being still under warranty I contacted the the seller in China stating I will send it back for a replacement, they didn’t want to know and just offered 10% of a new one.

Next I went through three Chinese Bluesky or similar cameras that has a capacitor so no battery to have issues with but they all eventually corrupted the memory card, various cards were tried but failed.

Next was a very neat and we’ll built camera from eBay that cost only £7.88 but the recording was very poor not 1080p it’s a shame really so in the bin it went.

Now Nextbase uk company, the 412 which is HD1080p and HD1440 is in the middle for size and just fits behind the mirror, the larger 512 with a similar spec would require in my opinion a bit of thought in its positioning, possibly not fitting fully behind the mirror between the windscreen and mirror back.

The cameras are fitted with a quick detachable mount, just pull the camera towards you to detach leaving the mount attached to the glass, not much use even if I wanted to remove the camera as the mirror in the way to pull forward.
So a detachable mount got those that leave their camera low down in the centre of the screen giving a blind spot... seen it many times.

Then there’s the 312 which is 1080p only which if I was purchase another camera that would be my option, both the 412-512 have WiFi capability to view the recording on a tablet/ phone but it a lot quicker remove the card, also both have GPS showing on a map where you have been and the vehicles speed, after I found that out I switched that function off :)

That’s what I did to get some understanding on the subject, the was a guy that was very good with his reviews and did quite a few models, the thing I was interested in was that some cameras that were very good couldn’t quickly readjust to the light from sun to cloud then back into the sun again so over or under exposure but that was only for a few 4 or 5 seconds.

With the Nextbase there’s available, as an option, (not all models) a Polaroid filter will does what it’s supposed to do, available on eBay at various prices all are cheaper than Nextbase.
That is interesting, have seen them on DSLR's.

Can you post a with and without vid to show us the difference?

Cheers

oh ok, i'll have to keep reading up on it

You must have a very rare iPad or dash cam 512 to be able them to communicate via Bluetooth, standard Nextbase communication protocol is WiFi. Not Bluetooth.
Transferring files from the camera to an iPad is painfully slow, as u know, if there’s two files for each recording when recording in HD1440 resolution, quicker to remove the card and copy it to a computer.

I’ve been playing around with dash cams for the last five years or so, I’ve had a few of the eBay versions, but either the battery has failed or they corrupt the memory card so I finally purchase my sixth camera a Nextbase 412 last year for the disco and it works very well and importantly without any issues what ever card I’ve used (remembering that some cards don’t handle repeated film re-recording therefore no manufacturers will give a warranty if used in a dash cams.
Hopefully I’m on to a winner as went I purchased two more for both my car and wife’s car they use the accessory socket with the power supply included in the box although the wiring goes up behind the A pillar covers to the camera.

A 16Gb card can hold 2 hours or there about of recording depending on the resolution.

Apologies , indeed ur correct , don’t know why I said Bluetooth, doh

I think I will have to get a cheap laptop as my old one still runs XP

Have heard that if I plug a rear camera into the 512 it’s suppose downgrade the quality of the front one, am still reading up about it if that’s true or not

Many thks ref how much time can be stored on a SD card , very helpful

Just got to find the best place for it

Most appreciated :D

I don't have one cos all footage I've ever seen of a crash is evidence for the prosecution as well as the defence. There was a fella on here who had a crash for cash. He looked like he didn't stop in time. And the video footage still meant he had a claim on his record. Saved the insurance company some money but did him no favors. There was another who crashed on a roundabout and showed me the footage. He got the rear quarter which means to me he crashed into the car in front, ie it was his fault. Then there's the recent footage on the news of the disco driver off here. Aint gonna help him. Etc etc.

I have a Hawkeye hd2 but they don't sell them anymore. Had dash cams for about 15 years. Started with bullet cams then moved to dash cams when they came out. All hard wired but take the camera down when parked. Tuck the wire above the sun visor int stead of it hanging down.

There's a lot of rubbish ones out there. The good ones have good vision in low light. The ones with infra red lights are crap. They fit the infra red to compensate for poor camera quality. Cheap sensor int camera.

Cheap memory cards oft eBay dun't last long. They're cheap for a reason. I have bought so many over the years it's unreal. Even branded cards from eBay/amazon or mymemory fail. I only buy memory cards from physical shops now. Speed rating is important but yer need to be careful of the values. Some qutie "upto" which means it probably won't get up to the speed they quote. Others quote minimum write speed which is the best option. They're guaranteeing the minimum speed. Both of these figures are write speed. Where they only quite read speed or transfer speed they're not referring specifically to write speed. It's the write speed yer need to consider.

Hard wiring is easy. Loads of peeps showing yer how to do it ont you tube.

you make a genuinely fair point

i'll check out youtube but i always thought theyd be hard to install

i see what you mean about the memory cards

We both have Blacksys dual camera doohickies. 1080p front and 760p (?) rear - about £60 ish on the zone of A - came in useful when SWMBO hit some diesel at traffic lights about a year ago... Given they record sound as well, it proves you weren't on your phone etc at the same time.

I know that, as Goonarmy rightly says they can be double edged sword, but .... the number of rather poor drivers about, we reckon it's worth the risk...

Not long ago on the M60, there was some twunt in a Bentley changing lanes like he was on a bl@@dy race track. I don't know how he missed us, but I was sure glad the camera was recording his, er, "antics" ;)

Trust me it int difficult. Yer need to access the rear of the fag @Nig lighter socket. Use a meter to confirm which fag @Nig socket wire is positive. With ignition oft cut through wires. Strip back and join them together with choc block. Strip back yer camera wires and connect to said choc block. Now pull oft A pillar plastic. Tuck cable out of sight under gear lever plastic surround, dash, then feed up A post. Either poke the cable above roof lining so it ends int middle by rear view mirror or undo sun visor and head lining screws to assist putting cable above it. It is easier to do this ont passenger side A post.

Second method is to get a carrier fuse and fit this to the fag @Nig socket fuse int fuse box by yer passengers feet. It sort of piggy backs the eggsisting fuse. Now run cable up A post as above...

I know a truck driver who has had several incidents ending in a crash. Peeps pull out and he can't stop int time. He won't fit a dash cam because he drives like a t*t and it would cause him trouble.

I ferget mine is there most of the time.
It dun't bother me having it. I make mistakes anorl. It happens. But one day it may prove invaluable to prove someone else caused an incident.
