Hi,

First post, so please be gentle :)

I have just installed (successfully) a tacho in my 1999 Td5 90 and I am trying to put the dash back in but I am getting stuck with the metal piece that goes above the steering column plastic "box" and the lower edge of the instrument cluster. It seems to be about 1cm too wide at each end.

I've obviously done something wrong as it all worked before, but for the life of me I can't work out what I am doing wrong.

Any suggestions? Presumably the metal bracket should go _inside_ the plastic binacle? I have attached a couple of photos which hopefully show what I am talking about.

TIA

Everything looks correct in your photos. The plastic binnacle is quite flexible. And it not secured at the front by anything other than the metal piece you are trying to get in. There should be enough flex to spread it apart to get the piece to slot into place.

As this is your first post I am going to assume (maybe wrongly) that you are relatively new to working on an old land rover? You will very quickly work out that 10mm is well within land rover tolerances and some brute force to get things to fit is usually required. Remember right up until the end of production these were hand built by brummies with hammers! I don't know what the official tolerances were but with mine a combination of age, and replacement parts, means if the alignment is within a fingers width it is fine and will be made to fit, more than that and things will need to be modified to fit!
