Yeah, wife had one of those in her car.....til the car was broken into and the camera got nicked!
I laughed at the irony of it. She didn't

Epic fail....unless it's small and discreet enough to leave in the vehicle.

What scares me is that the footage from that camera involving the merc, golf and truck looks so damn real!

I couldn't tell that it was fake, the only reason i think its fake in fact is because the blurb under the video says so.

Anybody else spot why the insurance company thought it was suspicious?

No. I've just watched this half a dozen times and I'm still blaming the car that drove off. Unless there was something in the claim from the car's occupants that didn't tie in with the video, such as the driver saying that he couldn't get out of his seat immediately because of his injuries.

You can get an app for your smart phone, and your not going to leave in the windscreen of your car. I have not tried any yet but some of the footage from them looks acceptable.

Is it not cheaper to buy a normal small digital camera with a a decent GB memory card recording ability & mount OR is it it ultimately better to have a more expensive GPS and time stamp camera recording ... anyone had to use this data in court?

I have a family member who uses a Novus dash cam:

Welcome to Novus

Very useful as she spends all day teaching people to drive in Peterborough. That Novus system records front and back.

She has had a new system fitted recently that records 4 ways - completely essential if you spend extended periods of time driving around dodgy places (such as Lincoln Road in Peterborough).

Road hawk 1 is £200 but you’ll easily find a 10% off discount voucher on the web. The satellite tracking thing is used to record yer speed and location. Once powered the road hawk records in a loop. It saves suspicious events in a safe area that don’t get recorded over. Also has an event button you can press to do the same thing yerself if you spot something.

I have recently used an Akenori Camera from Exeros Technologies.
Car Camera HD | Speed Camera Detectors | In Car Cameras - Akenori 1080P Pro

It's really good very clear with 1080P HD quality and has speed camera detection built-in. I had thought about their Cube 2 Camera that records well in low light also:

Car Camera | Car CCTV | In Car Cameras | Car Black Box - Exeros Cube 2

Well worth it I think so many idiots on the road nowadays and it's just your word against theirs. I also got a discount on my insurance.

could i ask the question...

could the camera also screw you in a dodgy situation... i.e can the police view the camera at their discretion if they pulled you?

Ive heard of situations of this with guys filming themselves on bikes and getting into deep **** with it.

There is the whole "if you obey the law you have nothing to fear" thing... but we are all human and we do make mistakes....

Yep vilguy I believe they could - Especially if it's using GPS data. It will pin you in that place at a certain time...
