Is there any resistance on your clutch pedal If there int then it does sound like the clutch arm pivot has worn through the arm. Do the gears grate if you try forcing the lever?

Does sound like it's the clutch department then. Have you checked the fluid level in the master cylinder?

if you turn the engine off, put it into gear, then try starting it, does it bolt forward?

if yella's idea doesnt give you any luck, try putting it into diff lock to see if it wants to move?

This might seem daft but the transfer box hasn't popped into neutral has it? It can look like it's in gear but might not be properly in.

So you can select gears with a slight crunching noise but haven't got any drive and the clutch lever seems a bit light?

whereabouts in thye country are you .... someone may be local to you.
Unusual, but get someone undeneath to make sure the clutch release lever is not jammed in.
If it is, the slave cylinder may be stuck, and it's cheap and cheerful to sort that.
I still favour the transfer box in neutral explanation ...

joy thanks for all your help the spline in the transfer box is no more that is what the problem was hopes this helps any other members who may have same problems. Does anyone know if the transfer boxes in the 2.5 diesel discoverys are the same as the one in the v8 and in the range rover of the same age 
Yes. I believe discos always had the same transfer box.
The defender transfer box has the same gear ratios in low box, but the high range gears are lower than in a disco. Some people use these when fitting larger tyres.
Not sure about the range rover tho. What age is your car? I know at some point the range rover had a chain in the transfer box, i think its the P38
