D2 Key question

Hi all im in need of a new ignition key for my D2 as its going to brake, but do i have tyo go to a main dealer as its needs to have the key coded for the remote? or can i go else were?

It would be a good idea to have spare, but I,d still replace the blade in the one you have.

If you go to your local dealer they should give you the key code, ( used for cutting a new blade ).

This chap always has new fobs with the barcode for a lot less than dealers. mailto:D[email protected]

The keys are coded and main steeler want about £100 for the bar coded fob and key blank, plus £5 to have the blank cut and then about £35 to code it to the vehicle. Although They had the key fobs in stock in the parts dept they then quoted me three weeks before the service dept could book it in, just to add insult to injury. good old main steeler.
You can find original equipment fobs with bar-codes cheaper, it seems land rover dealers are happy to undercut each other via E-Bay:doh:

I bought a 2nd hand fob from e-bay and a blank, I had the blank cut at a local locksmith, then found a Nanocom to code it to the vehicle. all done for about £30 in total. look for valeo two button fobs and as a separate seller Disco 2 key blanks, you need the plastic bit on the top so it will clip into the fob. for the Nanocom, ask on here, there maybe someone local that could help out for a beer.:)

That only nanocom, can set the key code using the internal six digit code that's on the back of the valeo fob circuit board, hawkeye maybe able to do it now but I am not sure about this.
 
hi Paul, i had the same problem with key about to break, i brought a new blank with clip off flea bay (£4.50 i think) had it cut at derby market, no charge, he could not guarantee it would work! put £1.00 in charity box, pulled out old blade from fob, there is a small pin in fob holding blade in place, this broke a small piece off side of fob, glued new blade in place with super glue, worked first time, no coding needed!!!cost total of £5.50! works perfectly every time.
 
Has anyone tried using a new key to replace just the plastic cover on the FOB, to avoid having to code the new key? I got two keys for my 2002 ES, both with worn out rubbery plastic bits that you press, but the microswitches all seem to work OK. Would save a lot of hassle if this would work, especially as we are in East Africa :)
