Seeking inside information - Did LR change the chassis composition during the production of the Discovery Series 2 TD5 / V8 ? A few people I have spoken to have had problems with terminal rust on the later models but I still see a fair number of earlier ones on the road, including mine. I may be lucky but with just under 250k on the clock everything is solid down below.

You can buy a galv chassis for a D2 but not a D1.
The D2 chassis seems to rot quicker than a D1 chassis, so something must've changed.

The OP was difference between early d2 and late d2? Im surprised they dont do a galv d1 :/ mine seems pretty solid, still had factory stickers on back haha !

I owned a 2000 D2 and now own a 2004 D2. They all have the same chassis. The earlier one had widespread and terminal chassis rot at the back. The new(er) one is not bad. I guess that they all suffer from it, but as has been said, it'll depend on how they've been treated, whether they've lived in a salty area, whether they've been offroaded to any degree, whether etc. etc.

There are replacement chassis available, but you've really got to want it to do it as these days the cost of having it done is likely to be as much as the whole vehicle is worth.

Make do and mend tends to prolong their life, but it'll get you in the end....

I have a friend who replaced his rotten chassis with one from a car the same age which had done 200,000 miles.

The replacement chassis was ABSOLUTELY rot free. He just had it acid dipped and galvanized.

The chassis on my 2002 Disco is in great condition with only a little surface rust, yet another pal has a car EXACTLY the same age, and the rear section has rotted away and split.

my car as pictured above 2000 X reg, rear pass side just starting to rot sept 2011 rear section, i welded it up shot waxoyl etc down all sections, nearly had it vertical with our telehandler, i never had any faith in it then, so got rid nov 2011, looked at loads and loads, a 54 plate sept reg, it was knackered, then looked at another 04 full of surface rust, now have an 04 pursuit took a bit of finding but chassis is top notch, just waiting till it finally stops fookin raining, then its going vertical 2 gallon of clear waxoyl after a good steam off, then give it month and fire loads of sump oil down the sections aswell, for a vehicle that costed around £30,000 you would think landrover would do something a bit different, even farm yard gates last longer, Galvanising plant in Solihull!!!!
