I have a mate with a TD5 D2 automatic which has a few minor issues - door locks not working properly, interior lights not working. Auto box damper loose. Rear chassis corrosion.

He wants to start green laning. Is it worth using this, with the inherent d2 electrical gremlins or sell it and get a simpler d1 with inherent rust problems.

What would you choose - D1 or D2?

i dont think the d2 has inherent electrical problems ,if your going through a lot of water wheel bearing hubs are more expensive than the d1 std bearings

D1... I've had a D1, D2 and D3 - D1 was the best for off-roading and the D3 for touring, I just didn't rate the D2 at all, only kept it for a year.

Or he could buy a real Landy and get a Series :p

I'd take a D2 anytime, much easier to look after, electrics are not that much of an issue if the interior is kept dry. I had a feed to the cigar lighter fail which turned out to be corrosion on the back of the interior fusebox connectors.

Mine is a Nov 1998 build and just passed its MOT in July at 158001 miles with no advisories.

With that much already broken would it be worth selling it?

I'd say use what he has which is really the only way to find out what he needs!! No point buying something first when he has something capable.

After all, he might be a plodder and not need anything more, or a monster and want to move up straight to a Trialler ... ;)

Had a mate, adamant that he wanted to go 'off-roading' who bought a seriously nice Defender TD5 .. what he actually wanted was a D3 G4 for non-scratchy, pleasant, picturesque, manicured lanes and to look cool! He hated the defender, couldn't believe they were so cramped, rattly and 'agricultural', even a TD5!

MHM,if your friend decides to use the disco, make sure he gets rid of the ACE system if fitted, the pipework could get damaged etc, same with the air bags on the rear sus.go with springs, thats what i would do anyway.

That would ruin it!
